TIF location

Does anyone know what conditions will cause the Temporary Internet Files to migrate from C:\Windows to "C:\Windows\Local Settings" ?

Hi IMM:
Excuse my ignorance on this one....if I'm totally offbase.

I did find that microsoft says:
The Temporary Internet Files folder is used to store data received from the Internet. By default, this folder is located in the Windows folder. If user profiles are enabled on the computer on which Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01 is installed, the Temporary Internet Files folder is located in the \Profiles\\ folder, where is the folder in which Windows is installed, and is the name you use to log onto Windows.


And this:
By default, temporary internet files (html and graphics files viewed in Internet Explorer) are stored at in the folder %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. You can redirect these files to any folder using the following Registry changes:

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Name: Cache
Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: path to new folder

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
Name: Cache
Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: same path as above

A restart may be necessary for this to take effect. As always, use caution (and backups) when editing the Registry.

No, you didn't make my eyeballs roll - I'm just wondering why I saw it on a machine I did for a friend (5.01 sp2). He didn't move it (either with internet options or a regedit) and probably couldn't w/o instructions. He may have deltree'd the directory from DOS on instructions at one time tho'. His profile (only one on it) hasn't changed (at least for username).

I'm wondering if he's been hacked and I have to go over it with a fine toothed comb?

Too bad I don't read as well as I can copy and paste huh? You're saying you knew it to be in one folder.and now it's in another. Sorry about that. But yes... they could save you some time and maybe do an online scan by Panda until you can look it over?

Mine flipped over also. I "think" it was after the upgrade to SP2.

Whitphil - unlikely to be the sp2 in this case - I installed with sp2 and it was stable for quite a long time.

IMM: The only major MS upgrades I have done, other than those at the update site, have been 5.01, SP1 and SP2. After one of these, (and I thought it was SP2, I noticed the \TIF files had moved).

I used to have two TIF folders, actually.
But I've changed my TIF folder's location through Internet Options/Settings, and moved it to C:\Windows\Local Settings myself.

Incidentally, I picked up this tip from P.C. Forrest: http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/deltemps_bat.htm

Afterwards I deleted my old folder in C:\Windows\TIF through the deltree command.
This works well, and, I have only one TIF Folder now.

The thing seems to be, that, if you install Microsoft Office 2000 you seem to end up with two caches otherwise. By moving the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) folder into the Local Settings folder, you can combine the two into one.
