some can access Office 2k-others can't

I help with a small schools computer lab. There are about 30 machines (Win98) hooked to an NT4 server. Each machine has Office 2000 installed on the hard drive. When students log in, there a couple of machines that won't allow about 4 students to access any part of office while others can log on with no problem. Logins are identical and I would appreciate any ideas you may have about this. thanks

If I understand this those 4 students can log in at other machines and work fine just not these couple (2?) machines but all other students can log in to all machines OK, is that right?

Just to make things easier for us if you'd be more exact (number of machines, number of problem machines, etc.) it really helps.

Question, does this happen at all times or just when you reach critical mass. In other words if some students on is eveything OK? If all students on is this when the problem starts? I'm thinking licensing issue?

    Thanks,
there are 31 workstations. there 5 workstations that won't allows 4 certain students to access office 2k but they can get on alright on allthe others and other studetns can work on the 5 "problem" machines just fine. Office is loaded right on to the hard drive of each workstation. The problem happens all times whether they are the only ones or the lab is full. It isn't a licensing issue since if the right people are on we can have the whole lab going as well as a few classrooms. Hope this is enough info to start.

Much better, thanks. Ok lets narrow it down some. What do the 4 students have in common with the 5 workstations. When they log in to those 5 are they able to use all other apps if any? Can they see the network shared printers / files?

When they were originally created in the network did they do it as a group maybe after the others under a different profile? Relating to this I understand each HD has Office 2000 on it but are the files shared on the server so they can't see them because of the network login being different on those machines? Win98 User profiles?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just typing aloud. This is a strange one. The fact they can use all other machines and all other students have no problem indicates a clean network but the 5 installations of 2000 seem to be the common denominator.

We need an Office 2000 expert here. I'm not. Do you know if Office 2000 has a profile setup?

Anyone out there familiar with 2000 that can help?

When they are logged on they are able to see and use all the other programs and the networked printer. They are all using the same profile and belong to the same group. I may try reinstalling office 2k on those machines since maybe they were set to run off the server although others able to run it shouldn't be able to happen. you are right in the fact it is a strange one. thanks for your input.

Sorry for the delay, regular duty calls. A weird thought. If you type *.pwl in the Start / Find /files - folders what do you get back on one of the good machines and one of the bad machines?
