ahh 1 thing i did notice is that on the Post screen it says "Award Plug and Play BIOS Extention v1.0a" Does that make any difference? or is that normal on this kinda PC.

Sorry to keep picking your brain!

    Hi IMM,

i've decided what the hell and done the BIOS flash anyway... (after putting my HDD back to UDMA-66 to see if it fixes DMA prob) and it went successful...
I put all BIOS settings back to how they were (quite a few things needed changing)... but now i get this problem when i shutdown...

After the Screen that shows the Usual "IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR PC" i now get below error insted of just switching off:

    -------------------
    Windows:
A fatal exception 06 has occured at F000:0000FE2A.
The current application will be terminated.

    * Press any key to terminate the current application.
    * Press C+A+Delete again to restart your computer. You will
lose any unsaved information in all applications.
    -------------------

If i press any key to continue then the monitor displays no signal message and the PC fan/lights are still on... If C+A+Delete it restarts as it would do...

This happens every time i "shutdown" but if i "Restart" all is normal!

BTW, with this CB 6112 BIOS update i have found i no longer need to underclock the HDD, and DMA enables as it should without it! sweet, but i just need to resolve the new problem now! hehe, always sumut

I've tried Reghosting 98 but that didn't help... i've also tried Win2k and that is unaffected by any of this, it never shutdown properly anyway(common prob i think)!

i've also tried looking for the older bios version 6111 and also a new 1 than 6112 with no luck... i thought maybe 1 of them may do the job!

Hopefully this ain't to major...Help... any ideas???

    Thx in Advance and Regards

How do i Restore my original BIOS if this prob can't be fixed? i backed it up by typing "awdflash somethin.bin mysave.bin /pn /sy" and have a file called "mysave.bin" which is my original BIOS...

    I think this is what i should type to restore it... "awdflash mysave.bin mysave2.bin /py /sn /cd /cp /cc" am i right?

    Regards

The numbers following the fatal exception 06 seem to vary but it still fails to Turn off EVERY time...

Can i try Flashing it again, is that likely to fix shutdown?

If not I wanna put back my old BIOS but not 100% sure how?

    I must be unlucky, Regards

    Are you running mcaffee?
What protocols are in for your network?
Run ASD and see if there are any failures listed.

    It's likely power management related.
Is your monitor 'green' - if so choose DPMI rather than v/h sync + blank in the bios.
Perhaps toggle the windows settings on power management around to see that it picks up the new bios settings.

How is your power management set.
Is fast shutdown enabled (msconfig advanced)?
Rerun the Add New Hardware wizard to see what's found.

ahhhh your here, Thx m8, here we go again...

i'm not using mcafee... i run NortonAV 7.5

    Protocols used:

    IPX/SPX... NetBEUI... NetBIOS... & TCP/IP

    What is ASD?

My monitor is a normal 1 and its set to DPMI!

    Fast Shut Down is enabled!

    NO new hardware found.

I'll make some changes... BRB, Regards

Disable fast shutdown and enter the bios to update the ESCD (reset configuration data).

ASD.exe is a windows diagnostic program on your HD.

I would sort this out (even god forbid if I had to reload 98). You won't really gain anything by going back on the bios - it's fine - windows is confused.

IF we can pin it down to a device (prob on the system board (tho' the reset of the HD firmware confuses things) we can remove and redetect that device. perhaps power management - perhaps acpi (are u using acpi or is it disabled in the bios? - i don't really recommend it on this board if it's available)

The point it occurs at may be video or drive related (power down states on them) but where the problem comes from ?

Did windows see the machine on a boot before the bios was fully set up ?

Made the above changes and the only 1 which made a difference was the Disabling Fast-ShutDown... it stops the error but PC does NOT power-off automaticly...

FYI: my power managment is set as follows:
    System Standby =60mins
    Turn off Monitor =30mins
    Turn off HDD's =45mins

i hope the fast-shutdown thing narrows it down a bit!!!

Thx i just ran ASD and it said...

Windows stoped responding while trying to perform one of the following tasks.

Calling a PnP BIOS => Get Statically Allocated Resorce Information

    adition details from clicking Details...

Win encountered a fatal prob while calling a PnP BIOS Function.
Specific function that caused prob is: Getting Statically Allocated Resorce Information

    Problem Ref: 0A 00 00 00 60 01 E8 00

    does that help? fingers crossed

check the box in asd and reboot.
For display properties (right clik bland area of desktop and choose properties) click advanced and under the monitors tab your monitor is correctly identified and not an unknown? All three boxes for Pnp, reset etc are checked?
