Possibly another MM app you installed has overwritten the previous app's settings. Go to Microsoft's Troubleshooter site first.

I have exactly the same problem. I get the same mmsystem002 error. Wav files work but real audio and mp3s don't. I have a 5240 Compaq Presario. It might have something to do with my 7200i HP CD burner. The burner isn't connected to the sound card because I can't find a connection point. Could this have anything to do with it? I can't find any conflicts using device manager.

Here is an easy fix for the problem. Try to reinstall Windows Media Player. I had the same problem and it went away when I installed the latest version, 7.1. I think it may install a new copy of mmsystem.dll which was most likely causing the problem.

In cases like this, it is best to start a new thread giving your particulars.

See if a couple of the ideas in this thread help out.

Might even have to uninstall your sound card driver, reboot then reinstall them.
