    Device Manager (!) & Red X's

My first try at this post got lost.
    I deleted the Raid 0 array and used IDE 3&4 for a 40gb & 20gb drives as C:\ & D:\. IDE1 CD R/W master and E:\ 6.5gb drive as slave, IDE2 CD Rom.
While loading solfware and drivers I had in the Device manager (!) on three Unknown Device and on PCI Mass storage Controler. In the Properties Device Status it says the drivers are not installed, code 28 on all of them. How do I find the drivers or ID what they are?

On a reboot I started getting a message, "Systems settings change, to finish setting up your new hardware you must restart your computer" If I click yes it reboots back to the same screen message over and over.
If I click no, windows finishes loading, but then in the Device Manager the (!) items above are gone and there are Red x's on the CD Rom, CD R/W and Generic IDE Disk Type 47 and (!) on the Primary and Secondary IDE Controler.
In the Properties Device Status, of the IDE Controlers I click the button "Restart Computer" it reboots back all the way, and the first (!) items are back.

Should I try to reload Windows or Format and start over?
    Can someone help? THANKS!

before you go thru the trouble of formating and reinstalling your OS, forst go back to the device manager, and remove each item with the exclamation marks and red X'x and reboot, this will give windows a chance to properly reinstall the driver, it it continues to have those exclamation marks and red X'x remove them again, and reboot again, and when it asks for the driver have the Windows CDrom in the CDdrive and direct it to the Win98 folder in the Cdrom...
    end

thge KT7-R is an Abit board.
Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Other devices.

Select one of the "PCI Mass Storage Controllers" and click Properties

    Select Driver/Update Driver
    Select YES/Next

Insert your CD with the ATA drivers which should have come with the motherboard and click "other Locations" You may have possibly gotten a floppy with the drivers on it, if so use it.

Whichever one you use, point the install to the ATA drivers on that disk

Click finish when loaded and then without rebooting, do the other "PCI Mass Storage Controller" the same way. Then reboot and see if your troubles are improved.

I use an Abit board although not the same one. I took this info out of my motherboard manual.

You need to install the driver for the ATA100 controller (the HTP370) for IDE 3 & 4.

It's detailed in the manual page 5-1 thru' 5-4.

p.s., You haven't lost your previous threads. They just got push down. You can do a search using your user name to find them. Here they for housekeeping:

Why don't you delete this duplicate thread :

Falcon2000 I did a search but I couldn't find the first one about the (!) and Red x's.
I could not get the wizzard to extract the hpt370 drivers, so I went in the CD and installed them, that took care of the Mass Storage Controller. I hadn't installed them before because It said it was for Raid.
Now to try and find out what the two Unknown Devices are.
I guess just reinstall all the drivers I have. or look for upgrades.

    Thanks!
