I have never had the Diagnose Connection return any useful information, whenever I have tried it.

According to AI (Google: "windows 11 Diagnose Connection goes to Microsoft Store web link"):
When the Windows 11 Network Troubleshooter ("Diagnose Connection") redirects to a Microsoft Store web link or the "Get Help" app, it indicates that the automated diagnostic tool is failing to run locally and is defaulting to a web-based support page.
This is not surprising. Also not surprising is that the web link was not to anything useful either.

What exactly were you hoping the the Diagnose Connection program would do for you? If you can reach sites on the Internet, what is not working that would need to be fixed?

If you could post a screen capture of the EXACT error message that you are getting when you try to open the Chess program ("Go somewhere else to find an app that will open this app!"), that would be helpful. A list of the programs where you get this or a similar message might also be helpful, along with the EXACT file name AND extension of the file or link that you are clicking on. I am still thinking that your file associations are not properly set up.

I think I haven't explained myself properly and you don't understand.

    Diagnose the connection, troubleshoot it!

This is no different to clicking on File Explorer and getting a message to go out on the web and find something to make it work.

Go to your win 11, find Diagnose Connection and click it. You will see it gather information and maybe tell you that it can't find anything wrong. I get to go shopping, even after the latest has been installed.

The msg is difficult to capture because it vanishes quickly.

Unless you are having problems with your network or Internet connection, there should be no need to "diagnose" anything. As I mentioned, I have tried the "Diagnose Connection" program numerous times when I did have issues, and it has never once provided any useful information that could be used to correct or fix anything. You are not likely to have much better luck with that program, although it never hurts to try.

File Explorer itself should not be giving you any messages to to go to the Internet / Web to find anything. If you get such a message when you click on a file in File Explorer, that is because there is no file association for that file, so Windows does not know what program should be used to open or use that file.

A message box that vanishes too quickly to screen capture or even read is not very useful, and can often be an indication of the presence of malware, although there are legitimate Microsoft messages that may do this.

When you see the message press the "print screen" key on your keyboard quickly before it disappears then you can open MS Paint and select "paste" to show/save the screen and message in its entirety.

It doesn't matter how well it works, what I'm interested in is why yours works and mine sends me shopping. It should go through the motions as it does on your win 11 installation. Why is mine different? I've just done a reinstall from the MS approved iso. It's as if I got a developer version in which the links were place holders that never got changed.

Consider my example above, you'd be very surprised if File Explorer told you to go on the web and get something to make it work - because it's an inbuilt, self contained part of the win 11 operating system. Same with diagnostics, or Search or Indexing or any other inbuilt, self contained part of the Windows operating system. And the chess program is a microsoft program!

Your capture method doesn't work on my win 11, Print Screen invokes the Snipping Tool, I snip, then there's no way to save the snip. I had to open the Snipping Tool first, get my fingers ready to press win/Shift/S, invoke the chess game and with the speed of a Kung Fu master, grab the snip. And once grabbed, nobody is any wiser

Have you removed the Microsoft GameBar software? It would appear that Microsoft wants you to reinstall it before you do anything else. That software is tied to other Microsoft software and tries to run even when you do now want it to or did not ask it to.

There is a way to NOT reinstall the GameBar and get rid of the error message.

So I am unable to Diagnose a connection. I doubt the text of the message is even relevant, maybe just the best it can do but I would still like a complete installation. The Win 11 installation was an upgrade from Win 10 done overnight by Microsoft without any notice or permission so I can't tell you any more about it. That's the whole story, error when trying to diagnose a connection.

    * FSC /scannow found nothing
    * Updates have not fixed it
    * I'll try and get a picture of the error because it doesn't look like a standard Windows error.
