    Upgrading my network card

Hi all, long time since I needed the community, but hoping someone is around who can help.

I have an old (ten years or so) desktop that has on board network chip, but it's not fast enough for my new fibre service. I currently use a usb wireless adaptor.

I can obviously buy a network card, but they come with lan cable type socket, and I want to be wireless. How can I do this.

    thanks

You can also purchase a wireless PCIe LAN card. I've found that available speed from such devices is better on average than a wireless USB adapter and/or a built-in MB wireless chip. No guarantee how much faster though since wireless communications rely heavily on distance, positioning and interference from walls etc.

You'd certainly want one with at least two antennae or even better with a remote antenna for better positioning.

    eg:

You would, of course, also want to check that you have the slot available on your computer before you purchase one. Not usually a problem since most desktop PC's have more than one PCIe x1 slot available.

Thanks Fink I've ordered one of those. Should do the trick.

You're welcome. The one that I used at work is very sensitive to how the antennae are positioned. Takes a little experimentation to find the best angles. They're easily moved by accident as well esp if there are pets or kids around so it's best to have an occasional peak at them.
