Resolved [RESOLVED] error message Package failed updates

    Windows 11 Pro
    Ver Dev
    9/13/2021
    21996.1
    Windows Feature Experience Pack 321.14700.0.3

When I open a file called Pictures and try to enlarge the thumb nail I get this message

I tried Settings, repairing/resetting the app. Didn't work.

The "Package failed updates, dependency or conflict validation" error means
a Windows app (often Photos or Notepad) can't update due to missing files, corrupted data, or conflicts, usually fixed by Repair/Resetting the app in Settings > Apps, running Windows Updates, using PowerShell to reinstall the app, or running System File Checker (SFC) & DISM commands in Command Prompt as admin for deeper system file fixes

What program or application are you using to open the Pictures file?

What file extension does that Pictures file have?

The application I use to open pictures is when I click on This PC I click on Pictures. The pictures show up with an extension but the folders do not have an extension. If I do a search for File Explorer-select file explorer-view-show and check File Name Extensions. The extensions show up on the individual pictures but not the files. I don't know what to do next to get the file extension for the icon in Quick Access that says Pictures. I can take a Screenshot but cannot send it as that message shows up.

I am not at all familiar with Power Shell.

    Try this first:

How to run scans to repair system files:

From the AI info of a Google search for: "windows 11 sfc and dism"

How to Use SFC and DISM in Windows 11

    1. Open as Administrator: Search for "Command Prompt" or "Terminal," right-click it, and select "Run as administrator".

    2. Run DISM First: Type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Wait for it to complete (it might take a few minutes).

    3. Run SFC: After DISM finishes successfully, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for this scan to complete as well.

    4. Check Results: Look for messages indicating if files were found and repaired. If any issues persist, run DISM and then SFC again.

That is not an application. It's a Quick Access link shortcut to your Pictures folder.
The Pictures folder is usually in C:\Users\{username}\

I suspect you are opening the files with the Photos app. You can try resetting the Photos app.

If that still doesn't work, you could try a photo view app like Irfanview.

What I use is to open pictures is This PC, double click on it, click on pictures, This shows all the pictures. If I double click on a picture, which used to show just that one picture. I get a message.
C:\Users\dean\OneDrive\Pictures\2020069_160159.jpg Package failed updates, dependency or conflict validation.
I tried the resetting link and when I clicked on repair the screen turned on for 2 seconds and disappeared. It looked like it started to run or load some kind of file but didn't complete.

Is Irfanview some kind of separate app? If I install it will I lose all my pictures?

I haven't tried jdc2000 advice yet. Do I go to Google and in the search bar and type windows 11 sfc and dism Is that what AI is?

Yes, it's a separate standalone application to view and manipulate photos and graphic media on the computer. You will not lose any pics/data. It's a high quality replacement for Windows built in pic viewer. I've used it in the past and it is a very good program that allows you to not only view the pics but edit them as well. Depending on what you want to use it for there are also plugins available for it to do some really complex work on graphic media.

The instructions are in Post #5.

Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Terminal (Admin), whichever one you have.

Enter the following command and press enter:
    Code:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
When that finishes, enter the following command and press Enter:
    Code:
    sfc /scannow

Thank you very much for the instructions!

It really helps if I put a space just before the forward slash. Duh.
So I typed and ran both commands and at the end got this message.
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I still get the message when I try to open a photo.

How to reset Photos app to fix problems on Windows 11 and 10.

If I go there when I get to the "Repair" button which has a checkmark by it I get this message

".If the app still isn't working right reset it. the apps data will be deleted."
So I would lose all the pictures?

I also copied the file "Photos" and put them on another computer. But I got the same message and it didn't open the photo.

    Thanks

Deleting the program should not delete the photos. A backup of the files is always recommended in any case.

However, as you have discovered, Microsoft's "updates" to their photo viewer software are easily outmatched by third party software.
