Updating from 10 to 11: TPM preventing upgrade
Hey Guys,
I bought my current PC from iBuyPower four years ago this month. Windows says that my TPM status is preventing an upgrade to 11. I asked iBuyPower about this and they responded with:
--------------------------
To enable your TPM2.0/Secure boot you will need to go into your BIOS. To access your BIOS screen press the DEL key repeatedly during bootup (before the Windows login screen). Follow these steps below:
1. Click on the Advanced Tab at the top of the screen.
2. Find the option AMD fTPM switch.
3. Click the Disabled option to the right.
4. Select AMD CPU fTPM to activate it.
5. Now the line item should say AMD fTPM switch [ AMD CPU fTPM].
6. Click the Exit Tab on the upper right corner of the window.
7. Select Save and Exit.
--------------------------
Not that I don't trust them but I'm asking for a second opinion: Does this seem reasonable to you?
--------------------------
Second question (assuming this works). I found this video on YT about upgrading to 11 "Install Windows 11 on ANY Windows 10 PC with NO data loss!":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_p3...st=LL&index=20
Can Windows upgrade from 10 to 11 sort of "underneath" all my data and applications? What do you think?
Thanks in advance,
Terry

The first thing I would do is make a backup of your Win10 installation. If all else fails, you can restore from your backup.
Every motherboard is different, but those instructions seem correct. They should know better than anyone else.
https://www.pcguide.com/windows-11/h...heck-tpm-chip/
From what I can tell, that video is explaining TPM bypass. I haven't used that app, and it looks like their Github site is down. I assume they are doing the same thing as the TPM manual bypass.

See the "(Optional) Bypass the TPM Check" section:
https://phoenixnap.com/kb/install-wi..._the_TPM_Check
Other than the TPM bypass, you can do a typical upgrade install. That should preserve your apps and data, but I would still make a backup first.

Thanks, Midknyte. I know how to backup my data but how do I backup my Win10 installation?

Nevermind, ChatGTP is showing me how to do it.

Does MS update from 10 to 11 offer this option? Specifically to keep APPS.

Well, it looks like I don't even have TPM version 1.0 on this PC. iBuyPower is saying "If the option is not available we may need to update your BIOS to the latest version." and they're giving me the latest BIOS file and instructions "ASRock Instant Flash User guide (AMD)". This sounds super scary to me. I assume I'd make a brick out of my PC if something goes wrong, no?

BIOS Upgrades are pretty routine. Just make sure the power doesn't go out while you're doing it.
Or you can do the TPM bypass as I have mentioned before.
If you do an Upgrade install, it should preserve your installed apps. You may need to update some of them to be Win11 compatible, though.

I looked at the video for upgrading the BIOS and there are a couple of places where I have to make choices. Not comfortable with making the correct one. All in all, i'm a litle shy in doing this.
I'll go ahead and follow the GHACKS method. Seems to me it's simply a matter of running "Skip_TPM_Check_on_Dynamic_Update.cmd" and then upgrade to 11 through the regular windows update section, correct?
Or does this "It includes a wrapper for Microsoft's official Media Creation Tool as well, and you may run it to install Windows 11 using it on the device you are using." create a different way to do the upgrade?
PS. I looked at the video iBuyPower gave me about flashing the BIOS. Maybe it's not as scary as I thought. So, would it be possible to update to 11 using the GHACKS method and the flashing the BIOS at a later time?
PPS. That video led me into another titled "How Risky is Updating Your BIOS? ( + Corruption Demonstration)". I might watch that one too

The "wrapper" is for when you create the Windows 11 installation media.

If you are going to update the BIOS, then you wouldn't need to do bypass the TPM with the installation media. The point of TPM bypass is to install Win11 on computer that don't have TPM2.0.

I updated my old Dell from win10 to win11 with no problems. No BIOS update either.

So "wrapper" is just another name for a program, an app?
Also, it looks like I will need space somewhere for an ISO of Windows 11 (I already have Windows 10 on a 2T external drive as a "backup"), correct? I do have just over 300GB free on a different 1T external drive and just over 200GB free on my C drive. If it's larger than 300, can I put it on the 2T with the Windows 10 "backup"?

Nevermind, AI explained it to me.
I tried to edit my last post and delete that question but there was no option to edit. Why would that be?
EDIT: This post shows the EDIT button but the last one doesn't.

AI explained to me what a "wrapper" is but I'm still wondering about the Windows 11 ISO.

As the article states, the script can download the Windows 11 ISO file and apply the script to toggle the Windows 11 compatibility checks during setup.
https://www.ghacks.net/2021/09/27/me...bility-checks/
If you don't want to mess with that script, you can manually disable TPM as I mentioned before.
