Resolved [RESOLVED] When All Else Fails, Ask the Experts

I always like to change some of the shortcut icons on my desktop. But windows 10 has a very limited selection. But windows 7 has quite a variety. One time, a number of years ago, I figured out how to copy the windows 7 shortcut icons into the windows 10 shortcut directory. It was somewhere in system32, a .dll

However, I have since forgotten how to do that. I tried doing it recently from a win7 pc & wound up losing the file altogether.

Now the windows 7 only has the same icons as windows 10, very few... To make sure of clarity here, we are talking about shortcut icons, not regular desktop icons. I tried to find them on the web, no success as yet. Any help. Thanks much....

Shortcut icons and desktop icons would normally be the same thing. Windows 7 and Windows 10 may have different images for the same icon however.

    Possibly useful link:

Note that you should always make a backup copy, in a safe location that Windows will not try to overwrite, like on a different drive, before replacing any icon files. Also note that if you perform the Change Icon function for a shortcut, you do not have actually replace the Windows 10 version of that file containing the images, you can copy the Windows 7 version to a different folder (NOT system32, maybe a WIn7 folder that you create), and use the icons from the file that you place there.

I'm guessing that you want to know which icons are in the different System32 dll files?

You could probably try copying a Win7 version of the file to a different folder. I wouldn't overwrite the Win10 version with the Win7 version.

What I want to know is : how to copy one [%systemroot%\system32\imageres.dll] from one PC & add to another.

I have long lost track on how to do this. I have a pc that has a full list of shortcut icons & I want to add them to one that doesn't.....
