    JoDoynm

    What ho one and all,

Was reading in a UK magazine about JoDoynm so thought I would give it a try. Not too paranoid about internet security, but if at all possible, I do prefer to be anonymous.

I downloaded both the main program (JoDoSetup) and Firefox (JoDoFox) addition; yet to install either on my XP computer but was trying to find some additional information. Almost everything I read implies that this is essentially a Linux based program with all the whacky Linux command line inputs, none of which I understand.

Is this program any good? Does it really mess things up? Is the JoDoFox configurable? (I am currently on FF38ESR and have it set the way I like it.)

    Toodle pip and thanks

    Rex

I use ZenMate free version as a Firefox addon proxy to access televised sports and TV from the US. It fully encrypts and anonymizes all of your surfing while it's on and there's no need to install a full program onto your computer. The free version allows you to switch between 4 different international proxies.

They occasionally ask you to buy the full version but it's not obtrusive advertising and the bandwidth they give you is pretty good... enough to watch HD streaming sports events without buffering. If you register you can try the full version for a week too.

    Gentlemen,

Thanks. yes I did read the JoDo wiki and I have to admit , I do not really understand it. If I install JoDo and JoDoFox, what happens? Is it easy to remove if i find I do not like it? Does it write files everywhere? Will my FF38ESR still look the same or is JoDoFox a whole new browser?

Following Fink's advice, I have installed ZenMate and to date, I kind of like it. Not sure what it is doing, but apparently, my IP address is now Germany. Checking the JoDO anonymity site, I am still sending a lot of information. Is this what happens?

You can also switch to IP's from the US, Romania and Hong Kong in the free version. I find Germany and the US to be generally the fastest and most reliable.

It masks your IP and encrypts all data to and from your computer which are the two main concerns for privacy. Really, unless you're concerned about avoiding NSA type surveillance that's enough for most people.

You can still perform simple cleaning on your computer to erase more info like deleting cookies or you can use the private window option in firefox to disallow any info like cookies or cache/data from websites being stored on the hard drive in the first place. Click File > new private window for that option. Note that some browsing options will not be available like automatic logging in to sites.

Worth mentioning of course is that once you do log in to a site with a username/password they will know it's you regardless of any precautions you take. If you log into an email service like gmail they will note the new location and send you an email warning that someone from that location has logged into your account. That's a sensible security precaution although it can be slightly cumbersome if you have a number of gmail or other email accounts like I do.

I"ve never used the other program but you install it like any other and it will write files and folders to your hard drive. To get rid of it you'd uninstall it, again like any other program. It would configure your Firefox browser to use it so that should not change the browser itself although I assume there will be another button or two on the toolbar to use it and set it up. From what I can see it's all in German. I didn't spend a lot of time looking but I did not see any English language version but maybe there is one.

Think I may have made a mistake with ZenMate as the implication was when installing, that I needed to provide an e-mail address. I did, and now it tells me that I only have a few trial days left.

Presumably the free version is just install and go; do not provide an e-mail address?

It will just automatically revert to the free version when the trial is up regardless of what email you used or what you do/don't do. The main difference is the number of countries you can choose and available speed.

Like I said I use the free version when I need to and it's just fine for my use and the occasional ad/email is worth the use of it.
