SSD Question

I have an Acer V3 731 with a 500 GB HHD. Using Seagate Disk Wizard Version 11 can I do an image backup and restore to an SSD and will Disk Wizard take care of the Alignment?

Disk Wizard is a repackaged Acronis True Image. Is there a reason you're using version 11? That came out in 2010. SSD support started with TI Home 2011. DW Version 16 is available. You should use that instead.

On pg 71 of the user guide, it says:

SSD alignment
Another question concerns the alignment of SSDs. To get the optimum performance from an SSD and
to prolong its life, the partition offset must meet certain criteria. In most cases you do not need to
check or manually fix the alignment, the program will do it automatically.

Appreciate the quick reply. The reason I'm still using Version 11 as It's what I started with and it works perfectly. I think I tried another Verion at one time and had trouble with it (maybe Version 14) not sure, I'm 80 and the old head don't work like it used to. I tried to install the SSD at one time using Clone but it wouldn't boot. Gave up at that time. I keep hearring such good things about SSD's I thought I might try agai and use Backup and Restore If youu can tell me 16 is 100% backward compatible with 14 I may have a go at it.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Why would you use 2 different versions? Just use DW16.

The first thing I would do is create a backup image (.tib) with DW16. Save the .tib file to an external USB hard drive. You will restore the .tib to the SSD and you can also keep it as a backup.

Install the SSD and boot to DW16. You will need to add the SSD as a new disk first. See section 6.3 of the User's Guide.

Then you can restore your backup onto the SSD.

I had no intent of using 2 Versions, was asking if 16 would work the same for me as 14. I downloaded and installled 16 and ran it. The first thing it did was send me directly to Acronis to get "full functionaliy" for 50 bux. Didn't want to do that. Went back and ran it anyway and it is so different than 11 I don't think I'm up for the learning curve. In your best judgement should 11 do what I want to do and take care of the alignment? The backup/restore rooutine is the way I intended to do i

There's a chance. Assuming that DW11 is based on TI Home 2011, then it should work. If DW11 is based on anything prior to TI Home 2011, then it wouldn't properly support SSDs. That being said, I would still use DW16.

Another option would be to use whatever cloning software that comes with the SSD. It depends on what brand you are getting.

Well as you say there's a chance I may just give it a shot again, I have nothiing to lose--I backup, remove the main drive, install the SSD and try the image backup/restore. If things go blooy I re-install the main drie and I'm back where I was. Thanks for that link!!!!!. Got no software with the SSD, It will probably be a while but if I ever get this working I will lrt you know.
