Well after a few days of testing my mouse still does occasionally go missing. It is not as frequent as it was before the registry change. It was doing it once an hour before the change and has only done it about 4 times in the last few days.
The only way to get the mouse to come back is to plug another usb mouse into the computer. Once that is detected the mouse cursor reappears and you can then remove the second mouse and go back to using the original one. See searching for a complete solution for this one.
Seems to be a pretty big problem in Windows 10 by the looks of some of the forums I have seen out there.
