FF slow to load home page

    What ho one and all,

This is another strange one. Ignoring the fact that I am using FF24ESR (because that does not influence my question) recently, when booting FF, FF starts but the home page takes about 30 seconds (or more) to load.

If I search for something during that time (anything will do) I get a list immediately, and immediately after that, clicking the home page button brings up the home page. But initial booting, it takes forever.

This has only started happening in the last few days. I spent too long uninstalling and upgrading to more recent versions, but the same issue, plus I don't like the newer FF versions! Some of the Add-ons refuse to work, even though they fall within the correct version. So back to FF24ESR and a long initial loading.

Anyone have a solution? it is almost as if FF is blocking the site, which is http://www.thebigproject.co.uk/original.htm

    Thanks

    Rex

tradedoubler.com is the only thing uBlock finds.

Have you cleaned the temp files out?
500 MB of them will slow things down and more you have the worse things get.

You could try changing your home page temporarily to see if the same thing occurs with a different home page set. My guess is that it probably will even with the home page set to about:blank. Most browsers take forever to load initially, then load pages at a reasonable speed. This can be due to any number of things, including the initial attempt to connect to the internet (Windows networking) taking some time, loading 3 GB worth of plugins, etc.

Thanks for the replies. Been having a few FF issues, so decided to upgrade. But doing so caused so many other issues with different add-ons and on restarting, the entire appearance changes, that I gave up and re-installed my current version.

Having done that, my homepage loaded fast 9as previously) but over the last couple of days, is slowing down again. Tried in safe mode and still slow. As jdc200 says, once the initial page has loaded, then things are reasonable.

Could it be an add-on causing the problem? But if slow in Safe Mode, then I don't think so.

    Will keep searching.

I don't get it! FF boots quickly but takes around 90 seconds to het the home page. Tried a different hp, but the same. Once up and running, all is fine.

Have deleted files as advised; no difference. Have replaced with a profile from about one month ago when all was working fine; no difference.

My wife is using an even older version of FF, both of us are hooked into the same router; she has not problem. I have installed FF36 Portable to a folder within MyDocs and that boots into my home page within seconds to FF starting.

At this rate, I am better off running FF Portable full-time. What else can I look for to speed up initial home page loading?

    Thanks

If the portable version loads OK, try disabling any add-ons you have on the other version.

As a head-up, I still don't get it; and now, I don't get it even more than before.

I boot FF and it loads within five seconds but as stated above, the home page (or any other that I have set) takes up to 90 seconds to appear. Once it has loaded, FF works as it should with virtually no hesitation. I tried running in Safe Mode, but the same thing. However, the portable version in a HDD folder, loads the home page within seconds.

Just a few minutes ago, started FF expecting to have to wait to use it (90 seconds) but the home page loaded in about 3 seconds as it has done for the past X years!

    As I say, I don't get it?

If your "home page" hasn't changed from the last time you visited it, the browser may be simply loading the cached copy from your hard drive . . . instead of downloading the entire home page from across the internet again.

Now if you have things set to clear the cache each time you shutdown, that long opening will take place.
