Installing Win 10

So I understand that after I have installed the Win 7 backup on the unused drive and then do what you call an "upgrade install" using the Win 10 dowload I will wipe the personal data and installed programs from the Win 7 backup.

No. A Upgrade installation allows you to keep intact the files, settings, and programs from your current version of Windows. A Custom install would wipe your data. Of course, you always want to keep a backup just in case.

Like I said, a "Repair" install is doing an upgrade install but you're staying on the same version of Windows. That's why they call it an "In-place Upgrade".

If you clone/backup your existing Win7 installation to an unused drive, you can restore the computer back to the way it was or boot from that drive in the event that you don't like Win10 or Win10, which is still in development, takes a dive on you and you need a working system.

If you want to do an UPGRADE rather than a clean install, you would need an older Windows to upgrade from. You would clone your existing Windows to the unused drive first, and then do an upgrade install of Win10.

jdc2000--You misunderstood. The unused drive is where I plan to install Win 10.

Yes, there is an Upgrade version. Upgrades are supposed to be free for the first year.

Thanks for all your discussion here,, so is win 10 in the update notifier worth installing over windows 7 64b, or win 7 still not an issue to walk away from?

There are loads of problems and errors in win7 yet, and MS only have the month or so to get them all fixed, so when the time comes and the download is ready, I would clone the drive first, then if win10 is unbearable I could quickly replace it while I waited for the fixes.


After all, win7 is stable, and everyone is used to it, win10 is different somethings are removed, Media Centre, the ability to play dvds (unless you install other software that can play them) and unless you want to be an unpaid problem finder for MS I would wait a while.

Win 10 can not even import HTML Favorites correctly in IE and the new garbage browser has no way to do it.

January would be a better time to look at it I think.

Going back to using the "hitherto fore unused drive" that I have.
If I download Win 10 installation media to that drive, could I not install Win 10 using that media on that drive? (If necessary I could have copied an image of my existing Win 7 so that MS sees this as an Upgrade.). That would avoid having to pull out the drive with Win 7 installed before installing Win 10 on the unused drive.

P.S. I have "reserved" my upgrade copy of Win 10 by accepting an invitation from MS I received yesterday. Although the invitation did not say when the upgrade would be available, I understand from a separate source that the date is July 29.
