    Moving partitions

    What ho,

My XP disk 0 is 500gb in size, with six partitions. C: (the OS) is 60gb; and towards the other end is G: which is a mere 10gb. I no longer use G: and would like to format it (easy) and then add/move those 10gb to C:

What is the easiest way to achieve this? I do have an image of C: and all my document files (D) are backed up.

    Toodle pip and thanks

    Rex

That would take several steps. You'd have to delete the G: first. Then you'd have to move each adjacent partition down until the free space is next to C:. Finally, you'd expand the C: drive to include the 10GB.

Which partitioning app are you using? I'd go with Minitool.

    Why so many partitions anyway?

OK, thanks. pretty much as I thought.

Don't laugh but the partition tool that I have been using forever without any problems is Partition Magic, but I also have EaseUS Partition Master. PM is purely for XP and I have never had a problem.

Why so many partitions? C: is obviously the os partition; D: is MyDocs and that backs up on the fly to another partition on the second hdd. E; is big(ish) at around 250gb and is a sort of 'PhotoWork Space' All my shooting is opened and initially saved here, as are scans and any TV shows, films, etc. The photos, once tweaked, are backed up to two external hdd which are the Hero Photo store. F: is a disposable Temp Internet files so that they don't get written to the os partition all the time; G: was for various program downloads but has filled up, so I intend to format and move. Program downloads now go to a larger partition on the third internal hdd. And the last partition on disk 0 holds the two copies of an Acronis True Image of C: But I also make a second copy to hdd 1 so that if 0 goes awol, I can still get everything back without having to reinstall.

Sounds complex but it works for me and to date, I have had no problems. The important partitions C and D are safe and backed up all the time (for D; I use File Hamster that backs up on the fly. Bloody brilliant, don't have to do anything, just set it up to watch the various folders. Change a file and the previous version is backed up; close a file and again, it is backed up)

Only downside of this is E: If the hdd goes down so will the images that I still have to work on. Some of the important folders are backed up to an external hdd, but there are plenty of files that are not.

Clear as the maths that control the Large Hadron Collider?
