    Movie with Codec

    What ho,

I have a movie file (avi) that will not play but it has an associated file Lite x264 Codec.exe. I know that installing this codec will probably allow the movie to play, but am always a bit cautious about this.

Is it OK ok install it or should I just steer clear?

    Thanks

Are you sure that's the right name? There is the KLite Codec Pack.

Normally, I would just install VLC or SMPlayer.

Yep, that is the name of the attached file with the movie avi. I know about KLite and am pretty sure that I have it installed. I also have the most recent version of VLC but this avi will not play.

I guess my question is, is installing this likely to install something I don't want? But if you can answer that, you can also select my lottery numbers! Or should I just reinstall whatever the latest version of KLite?

Standard was what I did use and had to go to the full before I gave up on sound, but check this chart

    Mega pack ? ? ? ?

Just installed K-Lite standard, newest version but still the movie file deos not play. Will try with Mega and see what happens.

Have been Googling Lite x264 Codec.exe and seems that it can /may be / does install something nasty that I don't want.

If the exe file was offered/downloaded along with the video I'd be very suspicious too. You could try scanning it here..

..to see what they come up with but if it's grayware, meaning not necessarily a virus but adware/nagware they might not flag it as malicious.

Personally, if it were my computer I'd either run it sandboxed or delete it no matter what anyone said.

I will delete it. It is just a movie that I would like to see but certainly don't need to.

If VLC won't play the file, then something is fishy. VLC plays pretty much everything I throw at it.

Deleting is the way to go. I will find another copy somewhere else.

    Thanks.
