    windows backup

    Hi

    here't the problem.
    I set up a machine with win98se, and all was well.
    then the owner to be said he wanted win 95 on it.
    I too asked why?

    well, they work with a DOS program which does database stuff for races, which they can then easily import in access 97, and print reports
    (seems the dos proggy was proprietary written and saves them a lot of time at the race.)

    anyway, they use the dos proggy on two machines, and they transfer files via win95 backup/restore

    so far so good.
    I would install 95

    BUT
    GRRRRR
    this PCchips crapola was good with win98se, and it acts like crapola on win95b
    (drive was cleaned.fdisked, mbr'd, cache on amd was set off, and I still get IOS error during the first reboot.
    and no, I don't format /s
    I did format /u

    GRRRRRR

    I tried win95b in fat16, and then in fat 32, both won't install.
    GRRR

    ================

    the question
    is win98se and win95a backup fully compatible?

    Both ways?

    (they have 95a)
    =================
    thanx, Jaak
    Kind regards, Jaak.

    When I pull my bootstraps, why don't I load Windows?

    Hi Jaak,

    Since you "nuked and paved" the machine to get rid of 98se before you installed 95b, this sounds pretty weird, doesn't it?

    How much RAM is in the machine? If you have more than one stick in it, pull out so as to leave only one stick and see if you still get that IOS error.

    Happy computing!

    Jaak,

    On the IOS error... You say this is an AMD processor. If it's anything above a k6-2 350 (up to the Athlons) do you have the MS patch installed that adresses the timing issue with these processors? If not you'll need it. However, the patch is only for the OSR2.x versions. The patch cannot be used with the original retail and 95a versions.

    As for backup... The backup sets created under both OSes should be compatible (though I have only personally ever gone Win95 -> Win98).

    I could call this one
    "grumbles from the grave"

    just fired up my trusted IWILL to get on the net. Most solid machine I ever had.

    Ain't ever gonna sell this one

    ===================================
    about that IOS error on the chipocrapola

    never thought to pull one of them 64 meg sdrams out. ( is there a memory issue in win95b?)

    (anyway, I could, since PC-Chipollatapolla has two 64sdram pc100 in it)

    but, I thought I had the cache issue covered
    I had already disabled the level two cache for setup...
    could mean I would need disable level one, and not level two... or need both disabled to run setup up to the point where the patch can be applied.

    at the moment, 98se is being set up on it.
    (just to test if I didn't ruin hard disk bootrecord or anything.)

    =========================================
    =========================================

    now, it would be nice to be 100 percent sure if backup sets from win95 and win88 are totally 100 percent compatible.
    (they'd know long names...)

    I sure hope they did not mean backup under DOS. (like 6.22 under win95a)
    I'd think they can forget about that.

    no long filenames, for one
    dos 6.x don't know fat 32

    but then again, the backups are put on floppies, so.... That's why I initially fdisked the machine in fat 16 mode)

    believe me when I say I've had my fill on this flakey pcchips machine. The time I put in there ain't worth whatever I make on it.
    (good lessons, tho.)
    ===================================

    my reason for saying grumbles from the grave are twofold.
    got mad about the win95 on chipocheapo issue, but got seriously aggravated when the new athlon 1133 on abit KT7a V1.1 proved very very very unstable.

    (already has a dual fan titan cooler)

    the abit mobo goes out, and is gonna be tested with a duron.

    the athlon will get a new home on an epox with DDR and raid

    if the duron on abit kt7a (v 1.1) still proves unstable, it's most likely mobo related.
    gets back to retailer then.

    He already told me he don't mind at all.
    Actually, he told me he's glad it was me.
    it was the first such he had in house, and had not been able to test the model yet.
    I'm his guinie pig on this one. and he somehow trusts my opinions on many things
    If I have unresolved issues, a puter illiterate user ain't ever gonna be asked crack it. (it's why he usu tries stresstests on boards he never worked with before)

    (did't know I was guinie pig when I took it home)

    next thing I could try (I reckon I won't) is flash the abit.
    again, not something he would ask of a regular customer.

    ===========

    okay, anybody know 100 percent sure if win95 and win98 backup is fully 100% forward AND backward compatible?

    I appreciate your help, guys.
    Thanks

    as expected, win98se did fine

    back to square one, wiped, fdisked, blanked, used other part sizes, and fat 16.

    disabled level one
    noticed no stick in bank 0

    opened machine, moved stick to bank 0

    win95 ( b aka ors2 ) setup is doing its magic

    actually, without cache it takes much longer than the normal time...
    but I finally got into windows hardware detection and will be able to install patch

    described http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623...update_k6.html

    download http://www.microsoft.com/Windows95/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S _WUServicePacks/AMDPatch/Default.asp
    ---------------------------------

    still can't wait.
    at least they have fat 16, and win95
    thy wish is thy command.

    =====================

    machine finally runs under win95b.

    got into another mess, after it had worked for win98 and win95 setup, it died?

    had to change out 8speed cdromreader.
    started to give 101 errors.
    tested with 98 booter.
    it stopped working in DOS from win98se boot disk as well.

    (when I pulled it, I found it is a packard bell... whatyaguess. The case wasn't...
    if it's rebadged and with chipolattabimbola inside, its gotta be suspicious hardware all the way.)

    one more thing by PB coming my way, and I buy a PBgun to shoot them to the moon.

    put a DVD in, and that works, so I'm off to the store to get a CDrom reader.

    should we close topic here?

    still don't truly know about forward/backward compatibility of backup 98 and 95.

    hmmm, I can test this myself

    Kind regards, Jaak.

    win98 reads and restores win95 "QIC" files
    (one experiences some niggles, backup isn't very user friendly)

    win95 fails doing win98 "QIC" files.

    subject closed.

    imho, microsoft should have at least made them compatible.

    hmmm.
    Kind regards, Jaak.
