    Resolved [RESOLVED] SATA DVD-ROM Drive

    Windows 7 Professional
    4 GB RAM
    Dual 2.95 Intel CPU
    Dell optiplex 780
I have a friend who has a DVD player only and wants to get a DVD burner. The model of the current one is a SATA DVD-ROM Drive TS-L333D/DEQHW. Will any SATA burner work? Or does he need a specific one?

    Thanks

If above information is correct, no.
    Cheers.

That's a slim DVD, usually for laptops. If anything, you could try buying a DVDRW for laptops.

Or you could get an external USB DVDRW.

    Thanks for the replies!

So how do I know what DVD burner to get? Do I go by the model number? Do I look for one for a 780 dell optiplex?

No. There are multiple configurations of the 780. Your friend must have a "slim" desktop.

Like I said, it's a LAPTOP drive. You'd need to look for a laptop dvdrw. Or get a USB external dvdrw.

The Dell he has is the second one from the right. I know the DVD he has is a mini. I looked at about ten used mini DVD that had SATA connectors that were burners but the person at the counter said it had to match the model number I had on the DVD player he had. That didn't make sense as I would assume the DVD burner would be a different model number. So that is why I asked the question if it mattered which DVD burner to get.

    Thanks for the replies!

Some wannabe techs don't know much. We do. So follow the link Midknyte posted above and it will get you the drive you need.

While you're at it, check for any BIOS updates listed, just as a precaution.
Due to the fact their mobos are proprietary design, a out of date BIOS causing burner failure would not be surprising.
    Cheers.

Either the Samsung or Lite-ON would be fine, but the Samsung is cheaper.

You can also look if there is a firmware update for the dvdrw. They usually help with dvd media compatibility.
