What OS and version of Office?
You can try this:
Cntl-A (select all), and Edit > Clear > Formats
Not sure why you wouldn't be able to open a new worksheet. You may want to uninstall and reinstall Office.

Windows 7 and Office 2000. Never have had a problem like this before. Even when using Office 2000 in Vista or XP.

Is it 32bit or 64bit Win7? Basic, Home Premium, etc? You might have more problems running it on 64-bit.
Office 2000 isn't officially supported on Win7 either. O2000 support ended in 2009. Did you try running it in compatibility mode?
Even when using Office 2000 in Vista or XP.
That makes a difference. Vista and XP support O2000.

I got it fixed. Apparently I had to run both Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner to get it. After I rand AdwCleaner is when I started noticing that excell had a problem as well as some word documents. But I didn't tie it to the vanishing of the gadgets I had. After running Malwarebyes I finally got the problem fixed. I forget I am running 64 bit home win 7. I forget that because I still haven't figured out what I gained by having 64 bit system other than having some programs specifically for 64 bit systems. Office 2000 works fine. And has worked fine for over 2 years. I should have figured I had to run both Malwarebyes and AdwCleaner. Just wasn't thinking. I even am sure where the problem began and that was when I installed Kindle for PC because of the extra programs it put on that I uninstalled from the control panel. Some of the crap it left apparently as well as pup something. At any rate all is well now and I am back to normal.
