Windows IE andMozilla Firefox are both locking up, but the whole systems gets frozen. When I try to open any file or folder, it stops responding.

Iwill let the system sit for 10-20 minutes and it remains non responsive, end up hitting the reset switch and rebooting into safe mode

Does it happen when you use any OTHER program?

It happens with any program, or even a task as simple as opening a folder.
The computer freezes up. If I try to close the un responsive item, you get the "end now" dialog, but it doesn't close the program. Same thing if you try to use task manager to shut it down. I can let it sit and sit and nothing happens.

It is definitely not a new computer, but it is a pentium 4 with 2.5 gig ram. Simple tasks shouldn't overload it...

At this point there is nothing malicious on your computer so...
In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
You'll get more attention.
Good luck
