I get the message "windows 6.1-kb2552343-x86.msu is already installed on this computer" So I went through the list of updates and could not find it as being installed or having failed. I did get a validation code though!

Have you tried a "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f" to ensure your files are okay?

I ran "chkdsk" /f and "sfc /scannow". chkdsk did not find any problems but sfc /scannow did and asked if I wanted to see the log. When I typed in the command it said I did not have permission to access the log. I ran chkdsk /f and sfc /scannow and both said all was good. The view the log command did not come up again.

Check and see if kb2552343 is there again. Click the Start orb, type in appwiz.cpl, press [Enter], click the "View installed updates" on the left, up at the top right, in the search box, type in kb2552343 and press [Enter]. Is it there?

Then you're good to go.
If you want it reinstalled, right-click it and select uninstall, then click the Start button > All Programs > Windows Update.
