[RESOLVED] I'm not crazy...my mother had me tested.
OK....maybe I am crazy. I keep hearing sounds. Not an unpleasant sound, but annoying in that I cannot find where they are coming from! It's a steady rise in pitch of 4 or 5 tones that lasts only a second. Like most of you, I am surrounded by electronic devices and are familiar with most of the sounds they make and what they mean. I have never heard this one and through a process of moving things around the room...it appears the sounds (occur at random with sometimes seconds between them....sometimes an hour or more) are coming from my Cisco Linksys E1200 router. So my question is....do routers have notification sounds? Because I have never had a router do this before. And if so....what is it trying to tell me?

I've never heard of a router with "notification sounds".
It seems more likely that the router is going bad, perhaps a failing capacitor. I've heard that on Netgear wgr614 routers. I've had to replace a couple of those.

OK......never mind.....I found the problem. And I wasn't crazy!
.....just under-informed...
Turns out it was an old PSP hand-held Playstation gaming device. I haven't used it in a very long time and it was on the shelf nearby the router and turned OFF. However it's big brother, the Playstation 3 has some weird communication thing going on with it since I paired devices a long time ago. I had remote turn-on disabled....but they started talking behind my back anyway. Have to figure out why they are talking with each other when they should shut up. The PS3 took a big system update last night, so I imagine something got glitched in the process.
Just glad it wasn't the router or my mind.
Thanks.

I'd like to know what they were planning. If I were you I'd be nervous falling asleep from now on. Or even just being in the house... (cue ominous music).
