    Volume Control Problem.

A friend had no sound on her computer(Windows 98SE) which has a ESS allegro pci WDM sound card. She downloaded the correct driver from ESS and installed it. She now has sound but when trying to adjust the Windows Volume control she can move the slider controls all the way up and they just move all the way down on there own. I've searched everywhere for a solution to no avail. Does anyone have a solution to this weird problem. Thanks in advance.

I had a simular problem once. Though I cant recall the exact particulars.
Gist of it was, there was another application running in the background possibly windows media player, winamp, or musicmatch jukebox etc. Whose master volume control was set at zero. It would reset the windows volume control every single time you tried to adjust it. In other words the volume control of the other application had taken over control of the situation.
It's perhaps a long shot, but you might want to check what you have running in the background and check it's volume settings.

It was winamp that did this to me. The easiest fix for me was to uninstall/reinstall multimedia in the Windows settings section of Add/Remove Programs.
