Windows Live mail
Tonight, when I came home from work I noticed a popup window saying something like Adware had been deactivated or something like that. I closed the window, thinking I would just restart it manually, but I guess I didn't pay enough attention to know exactly WHAT needed to be restarted. I also noticed that the Windows protection was in the process of scanning, something that is not supposed to be done during the day as it is scheduled for the night. I cancelled it as I figured it would just hog resources while I worked.
I also noticed that my computer was sluggish, and that darn new Internet Explorer 10 kept showing that 'the page X is not responding" (I hate that version of IE). As I tried to recover some of the pages that were not responding, I chose to close all the tabs, and completely close IE to restart. It didn't want to, and I had to repeat clicking on the X several times to finally get it to close.
Since it was closed, I thought of just restarting IE but it would not. I tried with the shortcut, with the Start menu, it would not start at all. I checked in the Task manager, and there were about 6 or 7 instances of iexplorer in the processes list. I was able to end all but two of them. Being unable to close the two left, I thought I would just restart the computer.
I went through the Start button to restart, and then my cursor didn't respond when I was asked if I wanted to force closing the programs left. I used the keyboard to answer the questions, but I kept getting other pages, like "logging out", "switching user", etc. I guess I didn't succeed with the keyboard.
I tried to get to the task manager, but again, my cursor was not responding, and using the keyboard didn't yield the result I wanted.
I chose to turn off the computer with the off button (last resort). When it restarted, I got a popup about my Dropbox being unable to access the windows registry (I am translating here as it was in French). Finally tried to open Winows Live Mail, and I get a popup saying "Windows Live Mail could not start. It may not be installed correctly. Make sure that your dis is not full or that you are not out of memory (0x80041161)". (and my disk still has 180GB free!)
Well, WLM was working fine before I turned it off so where is the problem and how do I solve that?

Use Windows' "System Restore" to roll Windows back to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Cassel--
Can you scan with your antivirus and MalwareBytes?

If neither this or the earlier suggestion helps, you may want to try a Repair Install.

Maybe it is Murphy's Law, but after rebooting several times, now, it works fine. Should I use these suggestions anyways, or just wait until it misbehaves again?

Recommend running at least the two scans mentioned by Welshjim.

A little late, but I am back. I did a scan, as instructed, and nothing was found. In the mean time, having restarted the computer several times (always hoping for a different result), it ended up working fine, so I didn't bother to do a restore point as the second suggestion.
Yesterday, my computer was turned off (nothing unusual there), but upon restarting it, I had issues with my Wacom tablet as it was no longer responding. Again, restarted the computer a few times and no luck. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it using the disk. It worked but was obviously reset to default. When I tried to reset it to my liking, I was getting a message that the driver was not installed. I went to Wacom site and found a more recent driver, downloaded it and installed it. I get the message that it was installed successfully. As I restarted it, and went to Wacom Preferences in my control panel, I get the message that the driver is not running.
With that in mind, I figured I might as well go for the system restore just to notice that I had only ONE restore point (just before a Windows update) which was about 12 hours before the computer had been turned off and started having issues with the tablet, so I figured it was a perfect point. However, in trying to restore, it is not working and I got a message saying:
System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\Carole\PSP\my stuff\Campus\html\WE8D8F~1.HTM) from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.
I figured I could just delete that specific file but I cannot find it.
Now, I have a less than functional tablet (reset to default) and a restore point that cannot be restored.
Any other suggestion?

Use Revo Uninstaller (Freeware version) to completely uninstall everything Wacom, reboot, then install the Wacom tablet as if you were starting fresh.
BTW, once you get your computer running the way you like it, you might want to consider starting some type of backup routine. (Acronis True Image 2013 for example).

Now that you mention Acronis... why didn't I think of that? I have a daily backup done with it! Duh!
I'll check that and look at the Wacom issue too.

OK trying Revo Uninstaller and it does not even see the Wacom in the list of programs, while it is visible when I go through Add/remove programs. Odd.

I got it working fine and was able to set the actual favorite settings I had in the first place. I uninstalled it with the Add/Remove program, restarted the computer, and I reinstalled the newest driver. Now it works.
(time for a restore point!)
