[RESOLVED] 0X7B error message while installing OS from CD

I am trying to install a new HD that I got from Newegg into a HP m8000 computer. I have checked the HD with ease us partition master. I am using a new CD with XP OS. When the computer sees the CD and is going thru the setup dialog the print on the screen looks jagged. Then I get the blue screen with the error message 0X0000007B.

Anyone have any ideas? I looked at the BIOS and the drive looks OK.
I am suspect of the video card. Would a bad video card give me this error message?

Can we assume that you are not using HP's installation media?

No, I am not using HP media. I am using a Microsoft CD for Windows XP which was bought but never used.

That CD might not have the SATA drivers needed to install XP on that system.

Did you set the bios to IDE mode for SATA (or something of that nature)?

Is that at least a slipstreamed SP3 XP CD? If not, then that could be a problem as well.

Did you run the hard drive manufacturer's diags on the drive? I've had lemons before, especially if they were handled rough during shipping.

BTW, did you check if that HP even has XP drivers? m8000 is a series, not the exact model number. That seems to be a newer model, so I'm pretty sure it didn't come with XP.

Some did come with XP.

Other than lite scribe, only thing I found, seems you have to install something newer than XP.

I must admit that I never gave a thought to the fact that XP may be too old for this computer. It came with Vista on it. I am sure the owner, who is my daughter, will not want to buy a copy of Windows 7 and she hated Vista. Maybe I could install Linux on it.

Windows 7 would be a good choice.

I am going to put the old hard drive in and try to do the "recovery". I have never done this before so it's all going to be new to me. The computer would not boot into Vista and the owner hated Vista anyway so I wanted to try another OS.

I'm guessing you never created the Recovery Discs either. After you finish the restore, look for something like "Recovery Media Creator". Follow the instructions to burn the Recovery DVDs.
