DAP??
In another thread, a comment was made about Download Accelerator Plus being a good piece of software. I've gone to the site and read all the fac's and reviews. Does anyone have an unbiased opinion of this program?
Does it include any kind of spyware? A lot of ad banners?
Opinions greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

Hi snarfl,
I use DAP sometimes. Alot less, now that I have cable. It does have a useful resume feature even if the speed is OK. I consider it to be a milder form of spyware. It only calls home when it is operational. I have never had it try to get to the net on it's own. As for the ads...you can go in and empty out the ads folder occasionally, but it will fill up again. Overall it does a good job. I have it set to manuel so it only runs when I want it to and I have disabled the other features like Explorer toolbar, etc.

Hi snarfll, ZA takes care of the spyware for me looks like and only use it for the bigger stuff. Worked fine on downloading Opera 5.12(111MB). I use it manually also.

Thanks GG1,,WOW,,111megs? Are you on dial-up? That's my biggest concern. No other choice at this time. My connection speed is pretty fair,44 to49kbs, but my downloads vary from 'bout 5.5Kbs down to 3.5Kbs and a' little more dependable speed would be a help.
My D/L's are usually for music tho', so they're usually 3 to 5Megs. Takes about 15 minutes for a large one with the lower rate and about 7to10 minutes if i get a better server connect.
But,,what the hey!,,a' lil' speed never hurts..

Here is a review of 4 download accelerators:
http://www.cnet.com/software/0-352105-8-6452231-1.html
In sum, Get Rite won editors award. Gozilla got the worst rating because of spyware and because it installs some software (zipzilla) without asking. It also monitors what you download and reports that back to the server.

Yep, all too familiar with GoZilla..Wouldn't touch it with a' ten foot pogo stick
Have read the reviews on the "new" version of Get Right. Many say it's now full of bloatware..
Many also say that version 3.2 is ok and still available.
Think i'll take a closer look at GetRight ver.3.2
Thanks for your opinions all!

greengoose1, Yes, your right on the size of a full browser download. But with my dial-up, i would have to start it and just go to bed and hope it would be finished by morn
As a bit on the download managers: Decided to try the 3.2 version of GetRight on my other machine. Didn't seem to want to recognize D/L's from WinMX even after i updated the mirror sites.
Decided to uninstall it. Seemed ok 'til i ran clean-up utilities after uninstall. When i ran I.E.5.5 repair tool, said i had a file that was too old and couldn't repair. Would have to re-install. Apparently,GetRight3.2 was written in '98 and changed an OLE file to the older one. Looks like a case of "use the newest version" cause older ones can make Windoze hiccup?
Anyway,,think i'll just stay away from download speeder-uppers and wait 'til i can get cable.

I have mixed feelings about DAP. It works well-BUT. On my machine it always tried to "phone home". It did it at the worst times,(middle of defrag, etc.). I uninstalled. Later I was told to try it again. Same deal. Did this happen to nayone else?
