KernelEX 4.5.2 for 98se(allows newer stuff to run on 98se)

Does anyone here have experience with KernelEX 4.5.2?

KernelEx is an Open Source compatibility layer with an aim to allow running Windows 2000/XP-only applications on Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium operating systems.

Am trying to install it on my 98se system here. However I get this message:

Microsoft layer for unicode is required

so I cancel the install.

However when I download MSLU for win9x etc and run it it just puts a file in a temp directory of my choosing. And it does not seem to be an executable. I then run the install of KernelEX again and it can't find it or something. Even when I put the installer in the same directory as MSLU. What am I suppose to do with this MSLU download? The Microsoft site comes up with nothing definite on how to actually implement it.

Maybe the install prompts me later to point it at the MSLU file? I dont know because I dont want to screw anything up by going on without knowing whats happening.

I cant really find anything anywhere that makes sense on how to implement MSLU or much less use it with the KernelEX.

ok it looks like it asks me if I want to continue and need to be connected to the internet. When I look at the details it says 'downloading MSLU'. So its probably automatic. I'm just a little scared to go on lol.

Yes. Thanks for the input Train. However like I said it appears the install was notifying me of what was needed and then letting me know in its own not-so-straightforward way it will take care of it automatically.

However I have done a bit of reading around on this and there really isnt any 'instructions' so to speak that I can find. People talk about a 'compatibility mode' but there needs to be a 'what to do after installing KernelEX' or something and there is nothing I can find. Maybe youtube has something.

ok bookmarked! How can I tell if my 98se has sp2 or not? Is that just for 98 or is it 98se?

The Service pack is just all the updates rolled into what they called a service pack.

I remember a couple patches made my 98SE run some programs bunches better. Which ones, sorry, been to long now.

As far as I can see it will add a KernelEx tab to the properties page of an .exe file, just like the compatibility tab in vista/7/8.

Then you run or install the program with the recommended settings you can cull from various lists such as http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1524...lity-list-new/, see below, though in some cases you need to spoof the OS version to fool the installer as well.

Thank you. I'll look into these more. From what I can see a few of the service packs Train linked me to use the KernelEX as well.

ok this works pretty slick. I can get the new flash to work but the latest JRE wont install. For those who are wondering, what happens is you install KernelEX and it seems to be pretty automatic. When you install something it automatically is in compatibility mode. If that doesn't work you can right click on properties on say the install program if its giving you trouble installing, and in properties go to the KernelEX tab and try different compatibility modes and see if it works. The latest JRE doesn't work but the only setting I didnt try was 'disable heap'.

ok never got java installed. Managed to get flash working though and Opera 11.64. It appears KernelEX has been discontinued.
