Will the XP Defrag app work in 7?

Several days ago I took in an Acer NV53A lappy for a friend who said it would get as far as the splash screen and stop loading/booting. After several days of not getting past the boot sector (my MRI disk testing showed hardware all good, OS corrupt/missing; and confirmed by BSOD trying to boot into Safe Mode) I froze the HDD overnight just in case the HDD was toast, hoping to offload the customer's photos and valuable documents.

I put it into my Linux box this morning, and the files still showed unreadable. Oh well....I put the drive back in the lappy along with a 7 disk, tried the recovery partition ONE LAST TIME for laughs and it actually started doing something. Go figure. Once I got it to boot, I cleaned out a lot of malware including something called PCSolutions 2011 or similar, ran Checkdisk on a reboot and it cleaned up a lot of file fragments. It now boots normally.

My questions: It's on its eighth pass on the defrag. I haven't seen defrag this slow since Win98. Will the XP defrag work if copied into the system folder and the computer's attention moved away from the native version? Anyone try this yet?

Merry Christmas to all of you!

The defrag in Vista and Win 7 is different.

Laptops defrag so much slower because of all the garbage the builders put on them. Have you tried Safe Mode.?

    Command line

    check out the H parameter.
/H Run the operation at normal priority instead of the default low priority. Specify this option if a computer is not otherwise in use.

I wouldn't use the stock defraggers anyway. Defraggler is easy to use (same devs as CCleaner)

My laptop shows 28% Fragmentation, so defragler will need most of the day to get things right.

I usually download the portable version from the other builds.
