    ==================================

This sys is back in the shop with a white-on-black screen on boot. Here's the message:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start Windows Normally. (Use the arrow keys to highlight yoiur choice.)

    Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
    Start Windows Normally"

The owner claims that the troubles started with persistent popups involving requests for installation of HP services, all of which had previously been disabled/deleted by me to conserve system resources for a speedier system. FWIW, I had previously upgraded the RAM to the max of 8GB, with excellent results.

I'd like to try a fix before running all the required steps for Broni's Intensive Care Unit and admitting it there, as I have no way of knowing if there's also an infection going on here.

Should I begin with the Startup Repair option?

    Thank you.

If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

I have not yet attempted it in case any of you folks had another suggestion, such as attempt to start Windows normally. But if the "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" option is my only one, then so be it. I'm hoping that I lose no data in the process. Should I need to reinstall the OS, I'll need coaching about how to do that while saving all the personal stuff.

    Thanks.

The repair opition works fine and is known to fix issues... You won't lose any data.

The message I receive after running Startup Repair is:

"Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically"

I ran Windows Defender Offline, Full Scan, after creating it on a bootable DVD and here's the result after the 4+ hour scan:

    Trojan:Win32/Dynamer!dtc Severe Active Remove
    Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-1723.AQT Severe Active Remove
    Trojan:Win32/Alureon Severe Active Remove

Although I was told that my "Remove" actions were successful, I still cannot get into Windows

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

I'd say it is now time for the Intensive Care Unit routine.

I'll submit a request, but if I can't boot into Windows, I can't run the tests that Broni wants the results of before "admitting" me...pardon the grammar!

Malwarebytes will install in Safemode. And I have installed it many a time using SafeMode with networking and was able to update and run it.
Then booted to windows and run it again. Keeping both logs.

    Train...

After tappng the F8 key, as soon as I get the Safe Mode menu and select Safe Mode with Networking, that screen goes blank within 3-5 seconds and I'm back at the Startup Repair or Normal Startup screen...no control over it!?

The two options are Repair or Replace.

(If it's so badly damaged that it can't be repaired, that leaves replacement).

Doc...I've been seeing that coming since yesterday as the attempts to repair fell by the wayside one-by-one. I have a virgin copy of Win7 HP w/sp1 from Digital River, and I still have some licenses left, so it looks like I've arrived at the clean install. One very important question, especially for the owner: is there any means available for saving some of his files before wiping everything clean?

    Thanks.

Sure. One way would be to attach the HD to another computer and copy their files off.

FWIW, I usually use a little USB 3.0 adapter like this:

    (Click it for more info)

but most any USB adapter should work. You also may be able to hook it up direct inside another computer.
