    Android Apps

I recently bought the Nexus 7 and love it. It removed the bad taste in my mouth that the HP Touchpad left....even if it was only $99. Essentially useless....even as a toy which I think tablets are for the most part.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone else using Android can give me a link or two to places with trustworthy apps outside of Google Play store. Google Play is alright as walled gardens go....but just a tad anal retentive on what they allow in their store. In short.....pretty boring stuff in there. I'm new to Android and don't know what is out there. Doesn't have to be free stuff....but trustworthy. Amazon app store is equally anal.

Google Play is the main place to get apps. If you think they are bad, I'm guessing you never had an iPhone.

You can browse through apps, but many if not all will link back into Google Play anyway. There are ways to sideload apps, but you said "trustworthy".

You're probably better off going to a mobile phone forum like xda for more in-depth info.

Just as a side note.....I decided I couldn't do any harm by installing Android on the HP Touchpad. Even if I bricked it, I wasn't using it anyway. The Wifi was flaky and very few good apps. I am happy to say the Touchpad is now running Android (cm9) happily, the Wifi now works, I have a real web browser....and I have access to Android apps instead of WebOS apps. A new lease on life for the ill-fated HP Touchpad.

Goodbye WebOS.....I hope we never meet again.

What can't you get from the play store that you can get somewhere else?

That's just it....I don't know what else is out there and was looking for suggestions for non-Play locations for apps. Looking to explore really. The walled garden format used by Google, Apple and Amazon provide good safe apps....but sometimes I like to see what folks are making that doesn't, for whatever reason, meet "approval" standards of the garden keepers. For example, when Play stopped supporting Flash, I was able to side load it and get it working in Jelly Bean using Firefox. Got me to thinking about what else can be had outside Play.

    Hi,

Most apps can be found on Google Play but there are others elsewhere, like Gmail or Skype (I only use these that are not from Google Play). By the way I am developing an own app for Android (similar to this one: http://www.voip-sip-sdk.com/p_456-vo...tion-voip.html), that will be a VoIP app. After it is done I am considering to place it on Google Play.
