XP connection error to shared drives

On my work laptop we still have XP Pro SP3. Instead of using the laptop hard drive for data, our group is using a network storage. So at any given time I have a few Windows Explorers open accessing my various folders on this network storage.

If I lose connection (ex: undocking to go to a meeting), I noticed that all the folders now have a pop-up warning that says:

    ConnectionError.jpg

Is there any way to avoid this? I've tried settings in Tools -> Folder options and with some Offline Files settings but no luck. It's not too big a deal. Clicking on the OK button makes the error go away and I can access the network files (once I have connection back). Just sometimes a pain if I have several windows open so I thought I'd ask.

Does the laptop go into hibernation or standby? It could be that the NIC is getting turned off.

Go into Device Manager - Network Adapters - yournetworkadapter - Properties - Power Management
Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

I think so. I prefer to put it into standby when taking to a meeting. Not sure if I'm being paranoid, but I thought if it were running it might be more likely to get damaged from movement while I'm walking to a meeting.

I will try your suggestion and also double-check if I get this issue if I don't put it to sleep.

Okay, went into the network properties (both of wired & wireless) and unchecked the "Allow computer to turn off..." options. Unfortunately I am getting the same error when switching between connections.

If you have other ideas I could try let me know. Otherwise - I'll just continue as usual. Like I said, not that big a deal - just clicking on the OK button and then refreshing brings up the shared drives. I was curious if there was a way to save that mouse click.

What do you mean switching? If you switch between wired and wireless, that is going to break your link no matter what power setting you use.

You might just need to give it a couple minutes to reconnect too. Other than that, I'm not sure if there is a true fix.

Yes, I mean switching between wired & wireless (docked & undocked). I realize it's going to break the link - I was just curious whether there is any way to not have that box pop up on every open Explorer window that is connected with one of the shared network drives.

    Thanks!
