Waiting For The Network and Never Connects Wirelessly

I have a Gateway MX6960 laptop that will not connect to any router wirelessly when security is enabled on the router. When security is disabled it will connect fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless driver several times.

I am using Windows wireless software to connect wirelessly. I didn't see any Gateway wireless software that I could use. Any ideas what I can try?

What OS is the lappy running... Guessing that you should be getting prompted to enter a password and that the prompt isn't coming up?

This is a Windows XP Media Center Edition pc. I sort of figured out the problem. This machine for whatever reason will not connect to the newer style routers when they are security enabled. The prompt to enter the network key does come up.


If the security is disabled then the laptop connects fine. I tried to connect this laptop wirelessly to an older Linksys Router WRT54G that was security enabled and it connected fine once I entered the network key.

There must be some compatibilty problem between the wireless adapter on this older laptop and the newer style routers.

You need to verify what type of encryption is being used on the router. WPA2, WPA,or WEP.

You may need to upgrade the wifi card drivers as well.

I set the router to WPA2 Personal and WEP and it still won't connect when the router is secured. I may have to update the wireless card. It willh however connect to an older router that is secured with WPA or WEP just not a newer router.

If running with shipped OS, Windows Vista, check/install hotfix(s).
e.g. Vista hotfix

Definitely update your drivers.

What service pack are you running? There was a WPA2 patch for SP2.

I was able to solve my problem by going to the Realtek website and downloading their Realtek Wireless Lan Utility. I am able to connect to all secured routers now by using this utility. The Windows Zero Wireless utility will still not connect but that is ok because the Realtek one does. Anyway, I went here and downloaded the UI Package and Driver version 1122 and now I am able to connect.http://www.realtek.com/downloads/dow...Downloads=true
