Win 98 goes right to Shut Down when started

Wow, I'd apreciate some help on this one. I was missing a DLL file and was told to reinstall AIM95 for the file, When I restarted my PC, it went right to the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. This happens each time I start my PC. It goes straight from the Windows 98 screen to the "turn off". What can I do??

    Thanks!!

    AOL strikes again.

Lets see if it boots up in SAFE MODE.

When you see the screen say starting windows 98 hold down the CTRL key, it should bring up a menu, select SAFE MODE. If it boots up OK in SAFE MODE, hit reply here and let us know.

OK, I'm soo close. The problem stemmed from wininit.exe being absent (it was a victom of a VBS worm I recently deleted). I copied the wininit.exe from my other PC, and low and behold, 98 started!!

Now I still get the prompt " WININIT.EXE cannot be run from within windows". I get three of these when I boot up into windows 98. I usually just close them out and move on, but I am curious as to why this is occuring and how I can fix this.

Any further help would be appreciated.

PS, your instructions to safe mode led me to finding the "command prompt" I needed to copy the wininit.exe file! Thanks

You may not of got all of the worm, because it can hide in wininit.exe file.

Go here and download the trojan cleaner from Trend Micro (at bottom of page), run it and see if that solves it:
    http://www.pchell.com/virus/wininit.shtml

    OR

You may have to re-create the Vmm32.vxd File

1.Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.

2.Type the following line to change to the Windows\System folder:

    cd \windows\system (hit <enter> key)

    3.Type the following line:

    ren vmm32.vxd vmm32.old

    4.Reinstall Windows 95/98.

This should be the last resort, as if this file is corrupt, a reinstallation is in order.

The usual cause of that message is the presence of wininit.exe in the Windows\system folder. You may have more than one there.

There should be only 1 copy of wininit.exe and it should be in c:\windows

    (not c:\windows\system)
