That depends on whether there is a restore partition on the harddrive. When you boot the computer, do you see any instructions such as F12 or other F number?

And some computers will let you create the restore disks from that partition.

And some do not have a 2nd partition and you have to make the DVD when you first get the computer.

A program to prepare a hard drive for use does not come with new hard drives because the hard drive manufacturer does not know what Operating System will eventually be installed. Therefore, the vast majority of Operating Systems come with the program(s) necessary to prepare the hard drive for use with that particular Operating System.

What is the model and number/s on the Gateway? Even Gateways have a way to restore the operating system most times. Does it have a keyboard/mouse and monitor?

Tried getting into restore by using ALT & F10 keys. Could not get anywhere... Not sure if procedure is being done correctly, or he is not catching it at the right time.....

From what little bit I read, it said to hold the Alt key down and keep tapping the F10 key.

If the hard drive has ever been replaced, the recovery partition may not exist.

As far as I know this pc has never been really maintained by other owner. Just like her car, adds gas and that is it.. and oil change...

Party has told me accessing HD keeps failing.. I seem to think its a sequence issue... Would Windows 7 install without a hitch? depending upon the pc having enough resources?
