Thanks. I have had a lot of trouble with this computer lately and am considering getting a new one. Might be time to do so.

You are so funny The last straw was this weekend I got that Fake Antivirus infection even though I have a good anti-virus, firewall, etc . and thought I was fully protected. I finally went into safe mode and did a system restore. Maybe not what I should do but that's what I did do. That thing was blocking everything except Internet Explorer .

There's a good chance that's the reason the updates won't install. System restore can't/won't get rid of the infection completely and now it won't let you update your computer. I'd suggest visiting our intensive care forum here...

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/for...?s=&forumid=71

and let us see the log files from the 4 scans detailed here..

Even if you do decide to get a new computer it would be a good exercise to clean the current one anyway both as a learning experience and to have a malware free computer available as a backup.

Fink, I think I got your message too late. I read all the instructions to do the 4 scans listed in the Intensive Care section but I had already tried to clean things up.
My Symantec Anti-virus found nothing. Malaware found 2 Trojan Medfos which I deleted, Super Anti Spywarefound A PUP.Start.Now Toolbar which is in quarantine and HitMan PRo found a couple of things besides cookies which I deleted. Think there could be any more of this infection some where?
    Thanks.

Hard to say but if it were my computer I'd rather be safe than sorry and do the scan regimen. Since you've already done the malwarebytes scan post that logfile that shows infections in the new thread that you'll start then continue on with the next 3.

    Security Updates

Maybe a silly question... but did you temp disable any anti-virus/monitoring program? I did a re-install of XP a little while ago...had the same issue w/ any XP update until I turned off the anti-virus program.

BawdaBingg, Thanks for the suggestion but that doesn't work either. It is strange that all the XP updates install but the ones for Microsoft Office won't.

Also, I noticed this entry in one of your logfiles in the intensive care forum..

    C:\Documents and Settings\Taylor\Desktop\Downloads\cnet_wordweb6_exe.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.D application

If it hasn't been deleted or quarantined I would delete it. Definitely don't try running it unless it's a proven false positive.
You could submit it here to be multi-scanned to see if it is malware or a false positive..

How about I just uninstall this program (WordWeb6) since I rarely use it?

That would work. Fact is the less we have installed, the better the computer runs.
