    Thank you both. I really appreciate your help. I am exploring several options including a fee-based conversion service by Adobe (only $20/year). I'll also look into the free service dneilson suggested.

    As to SuperSparks' suggestion -- I find that the WORD file I get after doing a Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V operation on the PDF file is gibberish. The file shows no columns at all; but it contains many but not all of the words in the PDF file. Something is going on there. I will keep experimenting.
