Resolved [RESOLVED] Cannot Upgrade From Internet Explorer 7 to 8

    XP Pro
    Service Pack 3
    Pentium 2.8 GHz
    Memory 1 Gig

When I try to download the upgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to 8 and I run the file I get a message that says I need an upgrade of a file called "Windows XP-KB932823-v3-x86-ENU.exe" When I run the file it says "failed to install. Try manually installing the file." Then I get a message that says "Setup Error. Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update." So I cannot upgrade Internet Explorer as it just goes through the same process. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info let me know. Thanks!

I think I found the right place in the site and it listed the problem I am having. What it said was that the service pack was a beta download and to remove it. It didn't say if it was service pack 3, but I assumed it was. It told me to go to remove programs and remove something called service pack 3 build. I could not find anything with that name. I did not find anything in remove programs referring to service pack 3. I did go to windows update to see if there were any service pack 3 files and found three. kb954155, kb978695 and kb973540. None of these were listed in the add or remove files. I did a search and found them in the windows file. I aos tried downloading serive pack 3 but it wouldn't let me.

What exactly happened when you tried to download SP3? Any error messages or codes would be helpful.

I went to the microsoft download site. Then the service pack center. Then the download sp3 from the site file kb936929. Then there was a screen saying Inspecting current installation. Then I got an error screen that said. This service pack cannot be installed on top of the windows xp service pack 3 build currently installed. Uninstall this and then install sp3 file. So I am assuming there is a service pack 3 on the computer now but I cannot find it or I don't know what it is called so I cannot uninstall it. I have looked in add and remove programs, installed windows updates, I have done a search for service pack 3.

Go to Control Panel>System Properties, and see if it says Service Pack 3 there.

I typed in the question "How do you remove service pack 3 from windows xp" and it took me to microsofts site giving four methods for removing service pack 3. Method 1 was the "Add and Remove Programs" in Control Panel. And as stated earlier "Windows XP service pack 3 was not listed. Method 2 basically said windows service pack 3 was not present or had been moved. Method three is use the system restore point. This computer had not created a restore point. Method 4 is Use recovery console. I don't feel comfortable using that method so I haven't tried it. In the control panel is says service pack 3 v6165.

Did you put the check in the Box so you can see the updates in add/remove.

Yes I had the checkmark there. I am assuming that the program or update file would be listed as something to the effect of Service Pack 3 or SP3 or something like that. Maybe it is a KBxxxxxxxx. So I did a search for service pack 3, sp3 and even v6165, which is listed after SP3 system properties, making sure all hidden files option was open. Nothing showed up. So, I tried installing service pack 3 again and got the message that I couldn't install service pack 3 on top of an installed version of service pack 3. So, apparently it is there or there is some reference hanging around to it.

It might be possible to reverse this registry hack:

Why would I want to do the hack if the computer thinks it is already using SP3?

If you do it in reverse, it will think it has SP2, and then you may be able to reinstall SP3. Just a thought.

Uncheck the "Show updates" box and then scroll all the way down to "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

I must be missing something. In reply 14 it shows a screen with "Windows XP Service Pack 3" shown as a program. I am not finding this in "Add Or Remove Programs" with either "Show Updates" checked or unchecked. I went to another computer with Windows XP and went to "Add Or Remove Programs" , knowing that Service Pack 3 is there, and couldn't find it there either. This is what I do. Start>Control Panel>double click the icon add or remove programs and wait for the screen to populate.
