windows update programs keep downloading
Dell Laptop
windows XP professional
service pack 3
Intel core 2 duo cpu [email protected] ghz
2 gb RAM
When I go to Windows Update there are always these seven downloads there. They download and run and say they are installed. When I turn the computer off and then on again it says there are files to download and they are the same ones! Here is a list of the files: kb251886-4, kb2539631, kb2572073, kb982524, kb2418241,kb982168, kb979909. If you need me to type out the descriptions I will do that. If you need more info please let me know. They are in the "Express" catagory.
Thanks

Did you try manually downloading the kb files??
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/default.aspx
Did you look at the installer logs? They should be the same name as the kb file in the \Windows folder. Ex. kb2539631.log

Go once more to Windows Update and you will see there are not more updates, and the icon in the notification tray should go away.
Also, look at Updates History (on the Windows Update page) to see if the updates where rightly installed.

pipercub- If the Updates really are not installing, these apps may help
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...3-D2C47C6FCFFC
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947821
If they are installing, uninstall them and after using the above apps, try installing again.

Before I try Welshjim's suggestion let me tell you what I have been doing for the past 2 hours. I found and manually dowloaded all the files except kb251886-4. Missing in the Windows folder was kb2539631.log. I did a search for that and did not find it. After loading and restarting the computer I went to Add or Remove Programs and none of the files were listed. In review your update history all seven of the files were listed twice and it says they are installed with the green dot and checkmark. By the way, thanks for the replies!

To get them to show up in Add Remove Programs, you have to select (check) the little box next to "Show updates" just to the right of center at the top of the window.

Just by following my simple suggestion, you wouldn't have to install the updates twice.

Welshjim's first site, I think, is just for Windows 7. The second site, I think, is for Windows 7 also, but there is a provision for XP. So I went there and ran a file called "fix it". And it said it fixed a problem for installing Windows update files. So I tried downloading the seven files already mentioned and there were three more files. It installed the three files and did not install the original seven files! I appreciate the suggestion of checking the box for the installed windows updates but only the "kb2418241" was listed. And it had been installed in November of 2011. So every time I turn off the computer it wants to install the seven files. Then, when I turn the computer on the icon for windows updates is there. And when I go there the same seven files are there to download! Just wondering. There is a program "Microsoft.NET framework2.0 service pack 2". Is there suppose to be a service pack 3 listed in installed programs? Service pack 3 is listed in "System Properties".

If neither of those work, Microsoft has unlimited no-charge e-mail support for updates:

pipercub--MS also has a phone contact for issues, such as failed updates, which involve Security.

Be sure to emphasize this is a security issue, so you will not be charged.

Just to let you know I got in touch with a tech from Microsoft and he sent me an e-mail with four things to try. These did not work. Then, he had me create three files and send them to him. I know they went through because I sent the e-mail to myslf also. I have not had a responce of any kind from him but I did get an e-mail for a survey asking how the "case" was handled. There was no responce to that either. I sent an e-mail asking if things were under review or if anything was happening. No responce to that either. At least the computer is usable.
