File Sharing Between Windows 7 and Other Versions Of Windows

I have been having some file sharing issues between Windows 7 with older versions of Windows for some time now. I finally found the fix and now my file sharing issues have been resolved. I am able to successfully share files now between 2 different operating systems.

Here is the fix is used >http://www.tannerwilliamson.com/2009...fix-samba-smb/

I'm new to Windows 7.....want to be able to share files/printers on my other PC's (not Win 7).
The above link would appear to solve my problem, however, when I search for "Local Security Policy", nothing comes up. The Administrative Tools folder does not show that topic.
I'm running as the Administrator. Is there something I have to do to get Local Security Policy to show up?

That fix only applies to Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Professional. Windows 7 Home and Basic does not have the Local Security Policy shell.

Well, isn't that special! So I quess I'll need to run around with a thumb drive all the time now.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Can Win 7 Home be upgraded to Ultimate or Professional or is a full install required or better yet, is there a fix for the Home/Basic version?

You should be able to get file sharing to work, although it might not be as simple as it should be.

You can upgrade Windows 7 home to Pro also, but that should not be necessary.

jdc2000 - Thanks for the links.

I'll give that a try as soon as I can get my wife off the Win 7 PC.

All OK now....well, it wasn't OK until I realized that I was logging on with a password. As soon as I removed that, all sharing worked just fine.

Thanks everyone for the links and your help.

You might be able to get sharing to work with a password also, as long as you have accounts with the same user name and password on all machines that you want to share files with.

    Hi,

From the sound of it, you have not yet tried to configure Microsoft Windows 7 for sharing by the default utilities included with the operating system. Especially since you have Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium there are some features that are included to streamline the network sharing configuration process.

In Windows 7, you can share individual files and folders—and even entire libraries—with other people. You may find the file sharing essentials resource helpful.

One new feature introduced with Windows 7 is the ability to configure a homegroup for sharing between Windows 7 machines within one network. For more information on sharing files and folders on a homegroup, click here.

You can still share files and folders within a workgroup should you choose to. This is the recommended method of sharing files between multiple machines if the operating systems differ from PC to PC as per Microsoft. For more information regarding how to configure sharing for files and folders on a workgroup or a domain, click here.
