I believe I've isolated and removed the bad memory stick.
Running memtest86 now for a bit make sure everything is Kosher. Then we'll try again. Hopefully I won't have to reinstall Win98se.

I've recopied HIMEM.SYS to the three directories specified in PC Hope again. Still getting the same error. Following file missing or corrupted. It's pointing at the right spot. sigh.
Taking a break. I'll chew on this a bit. Thanks guys for your help. I'll be back at this later.

Since it still can't find Ctmouse and it wont see HIMEM.SYS I may have to reinstall the whole OS. That bad memory stick may have made the entire setup unstable. Only thing I can think of.

Had that nasty thing happen to me also.
Just boot to windows, insert the Windows cd, run the install.
Some folks do not like doing that, but I used it as a repair install many a time.

I've already partitioned and F-disked it. 98se is almost installed again.

Fair enough. Tried to save you some work, but that works too.

On a related note GOG.com(Good Old Games) is now selling WC3 in a ready to go DOSbox wrapper for anyone interested:

Hmm, after restoring my 98se system and reinstalling everything, I have just put WC3 back on and it works right out of the box. Apparently no need for a boot disk or anything. Sound and everything works great so far. Must admit to being a bit disappointed. Was looking forward to working on the boot disk problem. I'm guessing my success has something to do with the SB PCI 128 sound card I installed. According to the drivers documentation it is geared really well for legacy support. Just a guess though.

The clean install of 98, once a year at least, has been know to solve lots of problems.
Glad things are working right for you.
