No Legacy on Windows 8 Tablets

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2393123,00.asp

No older windows apps on a win8 tablet (ARM). In another article I read that MS tablets will not support Flash, just like Apple. Ummm....so what is the point of putting Windows on tablets again?

If they are not going to make standard Windows applications capable of running on ARM chips, then there isn't much point in making Win 8 work on ARM either, in my opinion.

With license fees to MS, you can be sure that any decent win8 tablet will cost as much or more than an Apple....and bunches more than an Android one. Without legacy and Flash....there is no point in buying one.

Still waiting for my $99 WebOS Touchpad.

Interesting. ZDnet and others are also reporting that Flash will not run on a Metro tablet. Hmmm....

    http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/desktop-...lity-40093952/

"For the web to move forward and for consumers to get the most out of touch-first browsing, the Metro-style browser in Windows 8 is as HTML 5-only as possible and plug-in free," Hachamovitch said in a blog post on Wednesday. "The experience that plug-ins provide today is not a good match with Metro-style browsing and the modern HTML 5 web."
    Tablets are using Metro....

Hey....wait a minute. That ZDnet dude that says "calm down" is using a 2-year old article to bolster his article?

Alot of things change in 2 years.

Don't have a clue what MS is doing. Every "statement" they make needs a translator...

On the upside, I likely will have no exposure to any flavor of Win8. It will be several years before I need to buy a new PC, Laptop or Netbook...and after I get my Touchpad, I will have no need for one of those either. Looks like I will be giving Win8 a complete bypass....just like I did with Vista.

    Knock yourself out Microsoft....

Most industry analysts are thinking that businesses will ginving WIn8 a pass also. Of course, Microsoft still has plenty of time to make changes or reverse course, but they seem unlikely at present to get their corprate GPS reparied in time to get Win8 right.

I still have two XP machines that do most everything I need them to do. After that, two win7 machines. Unless win8 does something extraordinary....like clean my house and fix my car....I simply don't need it.

In today's economic mess, I can 't see any company getting excited about upgrading to win8 anytime soon.

BTW....I still like XP better than windows 7.

    Madd Maxx....

Could not have said it better, same boat 5 XP machines, 2 Vista, 1 with 7. See absolutely no worth in Windows 8 and kinda PO's me that Bill is cranking up the $ machine with such a blatant attempt at some more fast cash.

To resound, I too prefer XP far better than all other OS's combined. Please someone educate me what the purpose is for 8?

I think Microsoft is feeling a little left out at the party. It's all about tablets and smart phones these days and they want to be relevant in some way. Windows 8 and the metro version for mobiles gets them a seat at the table again. Oddly enough, they are being applauded by the tech blogosphere, which usualy hates everything MS does. Some even calling it the "iPad Killer"....but I doubt that.

    Just my opinions....

BTW....I still have a win98 and a winME machine as well. They are sitting in the closet, but they are fully operational if I ever need to run some really old software or need to grab something off an old floppy.

    I figured it out now.....

.....Steve Jobs joined Microsoft after stepping down at Apple!

    http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/19/wi...-distribution/

Microsoft will adopt a familiar Apple policy for the tablet applications on its new Windows 8 operating system.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 is the latest operating system to adopt a walled-garden approach to mobile app sales.

I too have a mothballed Windows 98 Second addition! Cannot match you on the Windows ME. Used win98 Second Edition all the way up to XP, in some ways I consider win98, the best platform created by MoneyGate.

Glad to know we aren't the only ones confused about what Win8 can do or not do on tablets.

With probably a year to go before Windows 8 arrives, it’s not a huge surprise that there would be a little confusion over exactly how Windows developers will need to manage Windows 8’s split personality. But it’s starting to get a bit odd that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) doesn’t seem interested in clarifying how Windows 8 apps will run on different devices....

.....But Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet noticed that a Windows 8 tablet running an ARM chip has a section in its Metro home screen called “Desktop,” which seems like it would allow that tablet to switch into Desktop mode and run PC-based applications written for Windows 7. That would therefore imply that ARM tablets could in fact run older applications, presumably through some sort of emulation layer that Microsoft has yet to discuss.
