[32] windows explorer has stopped working and needs to restart ... AGAIN

I think I am now finding a little bit of a pattern to this error ... because the laptop came preinstalled with all kinds of HP crap it seems that this error comes up if I click on the HP folder associated with all the preinstalled software ... tonight I clicked on the recovery partition and the error popped up ... it doesn't appear to happen any other time only with HP related stuff on the hard drive ... I did some searching online and found this which I will copy and paste here ..

    1. Press and hold the "windows key" on your keyboard and press "R" as the explorer error is cycling through.
Type in "taskmgr" and press "enter".

    2. Right click "explorer.exe" from the processes tab and click "end process tree", then choose "yes" of course and the endless cycling explorer error shouldn't bug you now.

is the above something I can do and is it okay to end this explorer.exe process tree or whatever its called ...

like I said, this error only seems to occur when I click on something associated with HP stuff .... I have a feeling that there are so many things running on this laptop associated with all the HP stuff and alot of this stuff I will probably never use ... I feel like I am being taken over by HP aliens

Yes, that should work. But I am curious....how much memory do you have on this machine? I assume this is 32-bit Vista(?). It would help to know what HP programs you have on there also...maybe we can help you decide what's needed and what can be sent off on a one-way journey into the Cyber Netherlands.

Personally I would do a clean install of Vista. All that junk causes no end of havoc and it's far better to start off with a new machine with things set up the way you want things, with only the software that you actually need. It's a shame that it is necessary to do this on a new computer - it's one of the many reasons that I build my own.

bistro ... there is 2 gigs of ram on the laptop and 32 bit Vista Home Premium ... I will get together a list of all the programs that are sitting in this SWSETUP folder ... I discovered last night that the setup for Norton 2008 is still in that folder, even though I ran the Norton Removal Tool ...

this little error thing only started happening and it is intermittent and seems to have something to do with the HP preinstalled stuff ...

I did just a recovery installation last week using the recovery partition ... I also have a set of Recovery DVD's and no doubt all the HP software stuff is on that too ... I'm wondering if I could just delete this SWSETUP folder, along with the Recovery Partition ... I guess the only other way I could do a clean install is to get a copy of Vista Premium and use the key that is on the laptop, and then activate it ...

believe it or not there was a SIMs game that came preinstalled on the stupid thing that was over 2.6 gigs ... and there is a bunch of HP stuff that monitors this and that and I have no idea if its necessary to keep this stuff ....

I will post back today with a list of the programs on the laptop and take the advice on what can be removed .... thanks a million

This program has been around for a while. People used it successfully with Dell systems, but From what I have read, HP is a bigger offender now.

It presents you with a list of what it finds as "bloatware" and you can pick and chose what to let it uninstall

    The PC Decrapifier

Scroll down and read "How it works"

If it ain't broke, leave it alone.

thanks dunedin ... going to take a look at the link now ... should I let this program kick out the REGISTRY stuff ????

here is a list of the HP stuff that is left on the laptop that Bistro asked for .. hopefully with the help of this forum I can be advised as to what can stay and what can go ... I have a feeling this intermittent " explorer thing " has something to with an HP program that came preinstalled ... I did read somewhere that this error can be caused by some Stomp Cd program which I don't have ...

The laptop is an HP Pavilion DV9726ca. On the HP website it comes up as the DV9724ca laptop, which according to HP is okay, I think the difference is the screen size, mine being 17”.
I have done the update for the BIOS that is listed on the page, and I don’t have the fingerprint reader on the laptop.

Here is the link for the page about the laptop

Here is a list of the programs that are left on the laptop that came preinstalled

Cyberlink You Cam - There is a webcam on the laptop and if I want to use it I can run it through Windows Live Messenger.

    ESU for Microsoft Vista

    HP Active Support Library
    HP Customer Experience Enhancements
    HP Easy Setup – Frontend
    HP Help and Support
HP Photosmart Essential 2.5 - If this is something to do with photos, I use Photoshop.

HP Quick Launch Buttons - There are touch buttons on the laptop which this applies to
HP Quick Play 3.6 - some program where I can click if I want to watch a movie or whatever, I think it works hand in hand with the Quick Launch Buttons

HP Quick Touch - Think this is tied into the Quick Play and Quick Launch Buttons. The laptop came with a remote control which I have never used yet .

HP Total Care Advisor - Some type of utility that checks the computer for updates, health, battery, and then advises you about security, firewall, antivirus, etc.

HP Update - this checks the computer for updates from the HP website. I can easily go to the HP website and check for updates myself.

HP Wireless Assistant - Something that loads in at startup and tells me that the wireless connection is enabled and that Bluetooth is enabled.

HP Network Assistant - No idea what this is.

Muvee auto producer 6.1 - No idea what this is, and I don’t plan on making any movies.

QuickPlay Sling Player 0.4.4 - No idea what this is.

Viewpoint Media Player - No idea what this is.

Thanks for any help in letting me know what is necessary and what isn’t. According to Windows Update everything is up to date. Its just all this HP stuff on the laptop and not knowing for sure what needs to stay, although I do think the QuickPlay stuff needs to stay because of the touch buttons and the remote control, apparently i turned this sucker on with the remote control *L*

In device manager, expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller.

Have you installed the chipset driver? It is part of it.

    Battery recall that may apply.
