ideal resolution for 17.3 inch laptop ?
Right now, I have a 17.3 inch 1600 x 900 HP laptop. My friends wants to buy mine so I am thinking of buying a new one.
Would it be okay to get 1920 x 1080 on 17.3 inch laptop ? I have this impression that the font will be too small to see clearly and enlarging the font size leads to overlapping of different windows and menu etc.

greendesert--I think most makers of 17-18 inch screens set the native resolution at 1600X900. That is because the screens support only up to 720 dpi.

1920 x 1080 to 1200 can be found on many 15.6" laptop screens. Some of MSI's newer 15.6" screens do 1080P HD. For example:
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCateg...ks&Order=PRICE
Over on the left side of that page, drag the "Resolution"'s left slider button almost all the way to the right until you see "1920 x 1080- 1920 x 1200". All of the laptops then being displayed will have a resolution within that range.

My nephew has a Sony laptop - its 15.6 inches at 1920 X 1080. It was horrible, the font was so small that it my eyes hurt to look at it. That is why I am asking if high resolution on small screen is a bad idea ?
I am undecided whether to get 1080 display or stick with 1600x900.

About to the top in the left pane, in the narrow search block, select the Advance tab and you will see the various sliders.
OOPS, that is using the good Dr. Link.

No, it's not a "bad idea" ... not for me anyway. (I can work all day on a 15.6" screen running at 1920xWhatever).
If it bothers your eyes though, then yes, it would definitely be a bad idea ... for you.

If you are considering buying a laptop directly from the manufacturer or otherwise online, it might not be a bad idea to see if a local store carries the same model. You can then check out the screen quality and resolution before ordering.

My 16" Sony Vaio has a 1920 x1080 resolution. I need to wear my reading specs when using it, but it is fine. Indeed I ended up going for that model because of the superb high resolution screen - I detest low res screens where you can't have more than one window open at a time. I'd rather have too much resolution than too little, you can always adjust the DPI if necessary.

Well, this is what I am talking about. My nephew has the same sony laptop with 1080 resolution. But, its kinda hard to read from it. I also want to get a high res for more digital room. Just wanted opinions from the wise folks here
BTW, raising the dpi causes too many issues.
