    IE5.1 tmp internet folder

I'm just starting to use IE5 rather than Navigator full time and wanted to move the temp folder to another location on a larger partition to save space on my boot partition.

Using the Move Folder button in options/settings it was easy but for some reason it's storing a duplicate of every file in the original location "C:\windows\temporary internet files" anyway as well as my new location "D:\temporary internet files".

The move process also created the Content.IE5 sub folder at the new location and deleted it from the standard location.

Does anyone know what the point of offering a move location option is in IE if it's just going to create 2 sets of the same space hogging files and how the heck do I stop it?

    Stranger and stranger M$.

Did you try just deleting C:\windows\temporary internet files? (the folder)

You could moved your cache into Local Settings. This is a good idea if you install Microsoft Office 2000, because you'll end up with two caches otherwise. There is only one cache of course, but Explorer dutifully displays two. By moving the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) folder into the Local Settings folder, you can combine the two into one. You can do this through Control Panel's Internet Options applet (also available on Internet Explorer's Tools menu).
Afterwards you can delete your 'old' folder in C:\Windows\Temp. internet files with everything in it.

I found this tweak at http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/deltemps_bat.htm and it does exactly what it says.

Maybe something for you as well?

Thanks. I renamed the original folder rather than deleting it, just in case, to "C:\windows\ __Temporary Internet Files", but this just gets better.

Even renamed the files are building in that folder which you would assume should not be found by IE through the registry or anywhere else as well as my preferred location D:\Temporary Internet Files

I suppose I could just delete it now but it's going to nag at me as to why 1st, it wasn't deleted or ignored when I used IE's move feature; 2nd, why would IE defeat it's own purpose to move the folder to a different location by storing 2 sets of temp files and 3rd, why when I rename it IE still finds it and stores temp files at the new named location?

I've checked the MS KB but can't find anything other than an explanation of the feature. (I admit I'm not great at tracking things in the KB, too impatient. Mo do you have your ears on?)

Anyone else tried to move their folder and if so what results did you get?

Well, I moved my Temp internet folder from the original location to C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files through Internet Options/settings, deleted entirely my C:\Windows\Temp. Int. folder, and have had no problems since.
On reboot de registry settings are automatically changed, so that Windows doesn't look for the files at the previous location any more.

Well, I moved my Temp internet folder from the original location to C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Ok, but my reason for moving my folder to "D" was a space restriction on "C" which is necessary for my dual boot setup.

I did delete the renamed "__Temp Int Files," and there seems to be no problem however I still wonder about the 3 questions I posed above and one other, why does IE have the "Temp Int Files" folder and the Content.IE5 sub folder caching the exact same info??
