Resolved [RESOLVED] HP Pavillion DV6000 missing DVD Drive

I am new to this forum, so please be patient with me, as I have officially lost my patience with this dvd drive.

For some reason, my DVD-R drive has simply disappeared. And, although this is a VERY common problem with Vista and HP, tech support is useless and there seems to be no way to fix it.

    Here is what I know...
If I thought the problem was the drive itself, I would just replace it, but the actual hardware seems to be working. I can hear it and it lights up when I put a disc into it. The problem is that my laptop does not recognize that it's there.

    Here's what I have done....
--> I ran fix-it, showed nothing wrong, but drive still missing
--> Went to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} in order to delete upper/lower filters, restarted, nothing changed.
--> I even tried the hibernate "fix" and nothing.
--> I have checked in Device Manager and there is no listing for the drive. It is not there at all.
--> I tried to retrieve the drivers, but without knowing the details of the drive, I found that difficult. I tried to retrieve the info from my back-up hard drive, but do not have any access to it. I contacted HP tech support and after escalating the issue, they sent me back-up CDs. (Since the drive is not recognized, they are useless).

My patience has worn out! I need help! Any and all suggestions are welcome at this point!!!!!
**When responding, please keep in mind that, although I am somewhat computer literate, I'm not a programmer....

Just because it spins and the light comes on does not mean that it is working properly. If you have a bootable CD (Windows, or a copy of the UBCD - Ultimate Boot CD), try booting frmo that. Make sure that the BIOS is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. If you can't boot from a bootable CD, then the drive is likely bad.

HP sent me 2 discs for system recovery (Vista Home Prem, sp 1), but I don't want to wipe my hard drive, just get the DVD drivers. (At least I think that's what I want). I think I tried booting in BIOS, but I don't recall the result, as I wasn't really sure what I was doing. I can try again.

    FYI...
I decided to run fix-it again and got the following...
--CD/DVD drive is not detected (not fixed)
--The drive is missing or disconnected (not fixed)
    Does that additional info help?

You don't need to install! But if you CAN boot to a disk, BIOS is seeing the disk.
So you at least know the disk drive is working. Then it's why doesn't windows.

    Post back with results...

And you should get a "Do you want to boot from the CD" prompt..
If you do it's seeing the drive!

Check the bios and see if the drive is detected first. If not, try physically reseating the drive. I think you need to remove the memory cover and there should be 1 screw holding the cd drive.

DV6000 is the series, not the specific model number. If you can give us the correct model number, i can try looking it up.

    I think it's a 6700 or 6700-something. Does that help?

BTW, I tried putting CD drive in 1st position in Boot Order, and nothing.

Boot order won't help in Windows. try reseating the drive, like I said. Look at step 4.

That's a pretty common problem with those HPs.
