HP Printer Driver For Wireless Printing

I have a HP Officejet G85 printer that works fine when hardwired to my Dell laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. However, If I disconnect my USB connection and try to wireless print through my network the printer driver for this HP Officejet G85 printer is missing.

Windows Update tries to find it first but it can't. Where does this driver reside for wireless printing. It must be in Windows 7 somewhere because it prints fine when hardwired.

Did you follow the install cd to get the wireless part. I had to use it and usb so the wireless could be setup.

A pain, but it worked for a HP printer this last weekend.

This printer is about 12 years old so the original setup cd which I still have has no wireless setup options.

That printer doesn't have a wired or wireless card in it. How are you connecting it to the network?

Check HP and see if they have a new version online. Probably do not!

The printer is hardwired to a XP Pro desktop computer. I have a workgroup set up through a router for all of my desktop and laptop computers. When I try to add a network printer my Windows 7 laptop sees the printer fine. It's just when I try to connect to it wirelessly it for some reason can't find a driver so that it can connect.

Lack of a win7 or vista driver is that cause.

If I run a USB cable directly from the printer to the Windows 7 laptop the printer is recognized, installs, and works correctly. I guess whatever driver is needed for wireless printing just isn't available.

So you're saying that on a wired network, you are able to connect to the shared printer? Wired vs wireless shouldn't make a difference.

Are you using hostnames or IPs for sharing? Are you using a static IP on the print server?

And do both computers have the same user name and password on them?

I have not tried a hardwired ethernet connection to the router to see if it would print that way. I will try to see if it will work like that but that is not what I am really looking to do.

This laptop currently is connected wirelessly to the router. While connected wirelessly to the router I can do a search for a network printer and it finds the one that I want to connect to.

However when it tries to install it can't find the correct driver for it to work so that I can wireless print. Yet if I plug directly into the printer by the usb cable the printer works fine from the Windows 7 laptop.

The Windows 7 laptop has a password and a different user name than the XP Pro machine that has the printer connected to it. The XP machine is not pasword protected but it does have a different user name then the Windows 7 laptop.

Instead of doing a search. Add a local printer then assign a standard TCPIP port. It's still done basically the same way.

I think I had a similar issue some months ago. I make a short description here to see whether my issue applies here as well; Desktop: XP SP3 32-bit and two printers connected by USB wire, one a HP, one a Canon. Laptop: W7 64-bit. Tried to connect through router to printers from the laptop and could not do it because W 7 asked for the driver. Could not set up because I used find printer on the network. Does not work this way and is N O T explained in W 7 help at all. Eventually I found the following solution:

Make the printer shared first.

1. In W 7, On Start Menu click Devices and Printers, click Add a Printer and choose Add a local Printer.

2. Choose Create a New port - Choose a Local port

3. Enter \\WHATEVERMACINEMAME\SHAREDPRINTERNAME as the Local port

This forces Windows 7 to load a driver enabling to print.

This is not explained in the Help and Support!!!!!
