    Fried MOBO

Friend asked me to look at it but I think It's obvious. He had an older Sony Vaio using a universal ps with a switch on the side that someone (his child maybe or him) changed the voltage from 19v to 24v and it fried something. I am guessing the motherboard but just wanted to checkin with the experts here to confirm it. If you know anything different let me know.

    thanks in advance

It's just possible that it might have only killed the battery charging circuitry. Does anything happen at all when it is powered on?

In that case, it does sound as if the mobo is dead

I let the laptop sit for a couple days and low and behold it fired up and reboots consistanly! So now I see that it is stuck in a 3% remaining charging mode but the battery is not really charging at all. New battery too. Is that a hardware thing or a software thing? How do you test. As I said before there is a daughterboard that is for charging too.

Use a multimeter and check the output voltage of the AC adapter.
That universal could well be going bad.

I checked the voltage an it is right on the money. I also looked to see if the jack was loose and it appears to be ok too.

Will it boot into Safe Mode and stay up, or does it reboot constantly there too?

I must have typoed..it boots up and stays on ok. Not a boot problem a charging problem. It does boot to safe mode. BTW it has windows ME which I have tried to upgrade it to Win2K and XP both but this stupid thing wont have any of it. About to give it back and tell him to toss it.

If you want to keep that unit, I'd replace the battery and the charger with new ones from Sony. That would probably cost more than the unit is worth though. Even though the battery is new, it may still be fried or bad, and the charger is suspect also.
