New mail notification problem with thunderbird

Using Window XP, firefox and thunderbird

I have an irritating problem with thunderbird. In order to get new mail notification, I must read the old mail, close TB, open TB, and then reduce it. If I do not follow those steps, I will not get new mail notification.

I have heard and read a little about pop peeper, which is a mail notifier, among other things. Will pop peeper work with thunderbird?

Reinstall Thunderbird, in case of corruption.
    Cheers.
