No biggie. I simply chunk the junk mail in the trash can by the door, or in Gmail, click Select_All > Delete. <-shrug->

You can get infected no matter what sites you visit. On reputable sites though, it's usually not the site's fault. The infections attempt to sneek in via the ads being displayed on the site.

just wondered why so many junk emails, seemingly all of a sudden.

I'm afraid you're not going to find a precise answer for that one. For example, one reason could be because there were more SPAM-spewing botnet computers powered up across the planet yesterday.

I do recall my browser being diverted twice at some point during this time and had to call on Task Manager to get rid of the takeover attempts.
